The computer is large and unassembled, so Dan Mathews deduces that it must be hidden in a large building in a remote location. He arranges to have Richard Ferris get the ransom money from the bank, but an officer who resembles Mr. Ferris is assigned to take it to the prearranged rendezvous. The thieves panic when they realize that they are under inescapable surveillance by the Highway Patrol helicopter. One gives himself up and the other makes a frantic (and inevitably futile) attempt to get away in the rough terrain.

A program of stepped-up enforcement reduces the accident rate on a new stretch of highway, but fast-driving salesman Harry Brent fails to heed several warnings. On the recommendation of Dan Mathews, the State DMV suspends Harry's license and his wife Clara begins driving him on his sales trips. Clara's cautious style of driving doesn't set well with Harry's impatient nature and the situation comes to a head when she is unable to drive after her glasses are accidentally broken at a roadside diner. Harry makes an impetuous decision to ignore the Highway Patrol's willingness to help and drive them on the rest of the trip himself, even though he has no driver's license. The decision has tragic consequences.

Against the advice of his wife Grace, Joe Bradshaw joins Tom and Charlie Fowler for an afternoon of bowling. Grace's instincts prove prophetic when Joe finds himself an innocent bystander as the Fowlers rob Mac Benson's roadside diner. Joe flees the scene in their car, leaving Charlie Fowler to be shot and critically wounded by the dying Benson. Joe knows that he will be pursued by the vengeful Tom Fowler and is mistakenly convinced that he is a wanted man. He is eventually forced to shoot Tom Fowler in order to protect Grace and he then makes armed threats against Dan Mathews and his officers. Dan must use guile and psychology to prevent the heretofore innocent Joe from actually committing the most egregious of crimes.

After several unsuccessful raids, Wilcox County Sheriff Barney Bishop enlists the aid of Dan Mathews in closing down Al Sandy's Club Bahamas, the site of an illegal gambling casino. Another raid is unsuccessful, even with the aid of Dan and his officers. However, they learn that the activity takes place behind two sets of doors and that very little advance notice is needed for Sandy and club manager Ollie Dyer to be able to squelch the activity and conceal the gambling tables and equipment. Dan assumes the identity of a heavy-tipping businessman and has Sergeant Corey pose as a telephone repairman in order to position themselves to control all of the doors when the next raid takes place.

Hitchhiker

Hitchhiking migrant worker Ralph Parry is killed by a blow on the head, but a staged automobile crash makes the death appear accidental. When an autopsy of Parry's body reveals that the death was actually a homicide, Dan Mathews and his officers investigate further. They learn that several other migrant workers have recently died in similar "accidents" and that they all had life insurance claims paid to mysterious beneficiaries that got their mail at Hutkins' Country Store. Hutkins repeatedly attempts to divert suspicion toward ex-con Hank Willis, but Dan knows that Willis is not the guilty party. He sets a trap in order to prove that Hutkins is guilty of multiple murders to perpetrate insurance fraud.

He finds that the residents are unwilling to do any business with him (or even talk to him) and that they are obviously anxious to see him leave. Even the county medical officer is behaving secretively and gives evasive answers to Dan's routine questions. Dan decides to investigate further when an inquiry to headquarters reveals that local farmer Charlie Barrett was attempting to drive away in a stolen convertible.

Radioactive

Sneak thief Herb Williams steals an oil indicating device containing highly radioactive beryllium pellets and jettisons it in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid capture. A scavenger named Adams finds the device and sells it to a junkyard where Mel (a ham radio operator) buys it for parts. Dan Mathews and the device's handler, Mr. Hoyt, remain a frustrating few steps behind the device despite reluctant assistance from Williams and Adams. Dan asks the American Radio Relay League to warn area radio operators about the device on its evening broadcast. The League does so, but Mel's pregnant wife Ann opens the device and is exposed to the pellets. Dan, Mel, and Mr. Hoyt have only seconds to prevent a tragedy.

Episode 9

Reformed Criminal

Frank McCauley has an automobile accident while delivering a $31,000 deposit for the Grantwood Farmers' Co-Operative. As a former criminal with an old charge still outstanding, everyone assumes he has absconded with the money and the Highway Patrol launches an intensive search. McCauley starts out on foot to return the money, but radio broadcasts about his disappearance and his past make him a marked man. When Ed Hutchins tries to capture McCauley at gunpoint, a scuffle ensues and McCauley looks even guiltier when he escapes with Hutchins' shotgun. Reverend Martin (the local pastor) still has faith in McCauley's reformation and he is able to convince Dan Mathews to give him the opportunity to do the right thing.

Grant Elliot accidentally hits Officer Len Dorsey when he panics during a routine traffic stop. Grant takes the injured officer to the hospital, but cannot explain why there were numerous auto parts in the back of his truck. He later learns that his father Charles has been stealing auto accessories and selling them to onetime petty thief Ralph Yates for quick cash. Charles asks Grant to deny the thefts, and implies that the boy should take responsibility for them if need be to protect the family. Dan Mathews does not believe Grant is guilty of the thefts, so he and Sergeant Betts launch a determined investigation to expose Charles as a pusillanimous felon who would ask his own son to take the blame for his crimes.

Jack McCall, a former crime boss turned "gentleman rancher" is scheduled to testify before a grand jury, but current syndicate boss Robert Wilson Houston and his henchmen are determined to prevent his testimony by any means necessary. McCall refuses to leave his ranch, so Dan Mathews decides to protect McCall by remaining at the ranch himself and stationing several officers around the property. After the failure of murder attempts involving a sniper and hand grenades hidden in a bale of hay, Houston sends assassins to attack the ranch house directly, but Dan and Officer Jennings spot the approaching car and are able to foil this attempt as well. McCall had originally sworn that he would tell the grand jury nothing, but he ultimately relents and tells Dan that he will testify fully and truthfully out of regard for the Patrol's efforts.

An apparently legitimate businessman named Masterson provides a "transportation maintenance service" to trucking companies. Jim Hawley's trucking company refuses to sign and experiences numerous costly breakdowns despite careful work by his mechanics. Dan Mathews finds that many of the breakdowns occur after the drivers have visited the Walnut Cafe and that two café employees (Artie and Jenkins) have ties to Masterson. Dan convinces Hawley to subscribe to Masterson's service while making certain that costly breakdowns continue. Masterson pays the claims as agreed but eventually suspects that he is being double-crossed and he confronts Artie and Jenkins at the café. The confrontation has an ironic result.

Dan Mathews receives an anonymous phone call that racketeer Johnny Barr is about to commit a murder. Dan and Sergeant Milan deduce that the call came from an accountant named Powers who handles some of Barr's "investments". Powers reluctantly agrees to help and attends a meeting at which Barr discloses that his intended victim is Senator Day, whose anti-crime commission has listed Barr as its number one target. Dan devises a complex scheme for escorting the senator to the scene of the hearings, but Barr counters with a series of henchmen placed strategically along the highway. The senator's trip becomes a dangerous chess game between Dan's men and Barr's, but Dan has a surprise in store for the would-be murderers.

State narcotics agent Ed Coleman asks for Dan Mathews' help in stopping a heroin distribution ring. Information from a recovering addict named Angie and from stunned honeymooners Al and Gloria Miller reveals that that the heroin is being hidden on cars belonging to guests of the exclusive Lakewood Lodge. The drug is later recovered by a pusher named Bolo. Ed Coleman and Dan Mathews apprehend Bolo and pose as lodge guests, but owner Arnold Blackwell has already learned of Bolo's arrest and has ordered the disposition of all heroin on hand. A critical break comes when Dan confronts a nervous bellhop who has obviously been assigned to remove specific cases of dried noodles from the lodge's storage facility.

Dan Mathews' suspicions are aroused by Ms. Douglas' lack of genuine concern for her unconscious husband and he launches an all-out effort to apprehend her. Aware that she is being pursued, the scheming Louise deserts the truck driver at her first opportunity and is able to steal a car from yet another would-be romantic interest in a bold attempt to elude Dan's unrelenting pursuit.

Mountain Copter

Newlyweds Walt and Frieda Hollis arrive at their mountain cabin and find seriously injured felon Mickey Demarest unconscious on the floor. While Walt hikes to the nearest ranger station for help, Demarest revives and escapes after overpowering Frieda. Ranger Ben Seward radios the Highway Patrol and Dan Mathews dispatches the helicopter after he recognizes Demarest's description and realizes that he could provide information concerning recent pharmacy robberies. Walt is shot when he confronts the limping Demarest, but receives the necessary first aid at the ranger station. Despite his injuries, Demarest is surprisingly resilient and he leads Dan on a difficult chase in the treacherous terrain. A final confrontation ensues when the increasingly desperate Demarest falls from a short ledge and refuses to believe Dan when he tells Demarest that he is only wanted for robbery and not for murder.

Elderly motel owner Ethel Cary is violently assaulted during an attempted robbery of her unbanked life's savings. The evidence all points to motel guest Roger Taylor, but both Taylor and Mrs. Cary pass lie detector tests. Mrs. Cary's nephew Henry is loudly insistent that Taylor is the perpetrator and motel guest Wilbur Morgan makes a point of volunteering information and additional evidence that would seem to implicate Taylor. However, Taylor passes a second lie detector test after Mrs. Cary is again assaulted and her savings are taken. Dan Mathews deduces that Henry and Wilbur Morgan must be involved and he sets a trap by asking Henry to take a lie detector test himself.

Scared Cop

Highly regarded Highway Patrol officer Mark Reynolds stops a speeding car and is surprised to find that the driver is his brother Bill (a military prison escapee). Bill assaults Mark and escapes when Mark draws his gun but is unable to shoot. Mark is distraught about the incident and offers his resignation to Dan Mathews, but he is vague about the reasons. Since Mark has always been a model officer, Dan investigates further and he is able to piece together the story concerning Bill and his frequent brushes with the law. Bill's continuing attempt to flee the area leads to additional assaults on a sailor and a local sheriff, but Dan and Mark eventually confront him face to face after he commandeers an elderly surveyor's car and causes a serious accident.

Harbor Story

Three men (Curtis, Taxton, and Geller) rob a series of banks in coastal towns, then abandon their rented getaway cars and disguise themselves as fishermen so they can walk to the beach and escape in a small boat piloted by their leader, Miles Lauber. After robbing the Cresdale City Bank, they shoot a witness in front of the bank and assault skin diver Bill Martin on the beach to conceal their escape. Dan Mathews and his officers get a description of the men and their boat from Martin. When the nearby Fairgrove Bank is robbed of $100,000, Dan and Officer Hansen are able to track the three men to the beach, but find they must first ensure the safety of two small children who are playing nearby.

Hit and Run

Driving immediately after a fight in which her husband Joe hints at divorce, Helen Barton becomes distracted and strikes a pedestrian. She panics and flees to her parents' home, and her strong-willed mother Irene decides to try to protect the emotionally fragile Helen by confessing to the crime herself. Physical evidence found at the accident scene proves that Irene could not be the culprit, so Dan Mathews begins interrogating all of the family members. Helen's father Ted realizes that the charade is hopeless and tells Dan all he knows. He then advises Helen as to the reality of the situation, but her grip on reality remains tenuous. Hoping to somehow belatedly help the victim, Helen returns to the scene, where a witness to the crime refers to her actions as "murder". Although the victim has not actually died, this encounter so upsets the disturbed young woman that she becomes suicidal and threatens to jump off a nearby bridge. Dan finds that he must use guile, warmth, and psychology to dissuade Helen from taking her own life.

Car Theft

Leroy Edwards pays $800 for a 1955 wrecked vehicle from Charley Giddings' salvage yard, but only takes the VIN plate so that it can be transferred to a stolen vehicle of the same make and model. Giddings is part of the scheme, but his assistant, Jimmy Higgins, innocently calls the Highway Patrol after the buyer fails to claim the car for several days, leading to Edwards' arrest. Out on bail, Edwards offers to kill Jimmy and then leave the country if Virgil (the theft ring's leader) will pay him $25,000. Virgil agrees but he then sabotages the vehicle in which Edwards and Jimmy are riding. Edwards is killed in the ensuing accident, but Jimmy manages to provide Dan Mathews and Officer Ellsworth with information that eventually leads them to Charley Giddings and Virgil.

Disgruntled engineer Jay Detterich rigs his car with stolen explosives hooked to a "dead man's switch" and goes on a suicide mission to destroy the chemical plant that terminated his employment. The plant is in a populous area and the Highway Patrol is instructed to treat the situation as a "Civil Defense Red Alert". Dan Mathews, a motorcycle officer, and a demolitions expert must risk their own lives to prevent massive destruction and loss of life.

Dan Mathews and his officers discover the murder of a forest ranger who reported the possible crash landing of a small plane. They learn that the plane's owner is racketeer Harry Barlow and that he is accompanied by his wife and pilot Steve Wasson. They confront Barlow's group and learn that they are there to pay $100,000 in ransom for the return of the Barlowes' daughter Virginia. Dan knows that someone in the group is guilty of murder and suspects that the guilty party may be Wasson. His suspicions increase further when the kidnappers turn out to be two of Barlow's employees and Wasson volunteers to be taken as a hostage. Dan permits the kidnappers and their "hostage" to leave the ransom scene, but the surprised felons soon find themselves in an armed confrontation with Dan and his officers.

Swindler-turned-murderer Stan Warren is on the run from the Highway Patrol and looking to leave the state quickly. He abandons his vehicle near a roadside diner and convinces desert-bound college professors Steve Lamont and Gordon Ryan to permit him to join them. After tying up Ryan, he forces Lamont to use his jeep to drive toward the state line over the rough and little-used desert roads. Dan Mathews uses the Highway Patrol helicopter to locate the moving jeep, get ahead of it, and commandeer a large truck to block the road. Warren is able to wound an officer during a brief gun battle near the stopped truck, but he is unable to escape from Dan Mathews, who fires upon him from the helicopter with a rifle.

Plant Robbery

Diner owners Art and Kay Denson and mechanic Walt Burns steal $29,000 from a supermarket by posing as armored truck guards. The elaborate ruse involves stolen guard uniforms and an expertly-crafted bogus armored truck created by Burns. None of the three has a prior criminal record and they figure they will wait for an extended period before spending any of the money. However, Dan Mathews and Sergeant Moore quickly identify Burns as a possible suspect by checking recent orders for sheet metal and bullet-proof glass. When they travel to his body shop to question Burns, he panics and shows up at the Densons' diner to demand his share of the money immediately. Art agrees to meet him on a deserted road for a "settlement", but instead kills him as Kay watches in horror. She becomes increasingly frightened about being involved in murder and attempts to escape from Art, but she is unsuccessful and soon finds herself being used as Art's hostage when Dan and Sergeant Moore show up at the Densons' home.

Steve Naylor was imprisoned for six years for his part in stealing $250,000 in an armored car robbery. The money was never recovered and an insurance investigator has been watching him and informing Dan Mathews of his movements. When the investigator informs Dan Mathews that Naylor has suddenly broken his routine, Dan and his officers know they must be discreet about following the tail-wise felon. They use an unmarked car and triangulation radio equipment (complete with concealed transmitter) to follow Naylor and his accomplice Carson to the remote hiding place. A gun battle erupts after the money has been dug up. Naylor and Carson's greed and mutual distrust for each other result in an ironic climax.

Motorcycle A

Cafe owner Bernie Sills hates motorcyclists because of injuries to his wife and damages to his property during a renegade biker attack months earlier. When he threatens non-violent cyclists Joe Keeley and Nick West with a shotgun, a minor altercation ensues after Mrs. Sills calls the Highway Patrol. Responding Officer Jack Anders is killed in an accident involving a truck driver's negligence while pursuing Keeley and West. When Dan Mathews and Officer Dorsey investigate, Sills tries to blame the cyclists for Officer Anders' death. He exaggerates their behavior in his statements, but he is careful not to mention that he had provoked the altercation by brandishing the shotgun. Dan advises Sills that Keeley and West are being sought primarily as witnesses to the accident and notes that Mrs. Sills seems to be seeking to distance herself somewhat from her husband's statements. When Keeley and West are located, Dan and Officer Dorsey hear a very different story concerning the incident and Dan learns of the shotgun threat for the first time. He decides to test Sills' veracity by watching from a distance while an unshaven motorcycle officer wearing black leather gear visits the café. Sills' actions leave no doubt as to who was telling the truth.

Episode 28

Mental Patient

Clarence Miller escapes from the state mental hospital and heads toward a rural area. He becomes the primary suspect when local farmer Ed Burr is killed and his body is found severely mangled. Hungry and confused, he stops at the farm of Lucy Clifford and finds her willing to feed and talk to him. Dan Mathews and his officers converge on the area and find their search hindered by Milo Hobson, a shotgun-wielding friend of the dead man who matter-of-factly states that he has no intention of letting that "...homicidal maniac get off with an insanity plea." Dan learns of Miller's visit to Lucy's farm and he also learns that Burr actually died of a heart attack and that his body was subsequently trampled by livestock. He also learns that he has only minutes to find the confused young man before he becomes a victim of Hobson's shotgun.

Recently-paroled holdup man Seth Roberts returns to his old trade and initially pulls several successful jobs due to his mannerly demeanor and his nondescript appearance. Young Jimmy James (who aspires to become a police officer) spots him switching getaway cars after a robbery and is able to provide Dan Mathews with accurate descriptions of Roberts, his car, and even his out-of-state license plate and plate number. After two holdup victims corroborate Jimmy's description of Roberts, Dan and Sergeant Corey track him to a motel owned by his cousin, Carl Simmons. Notes found at the motel enable them to set a trap for Roberts, who has already arranged for a ride back to Dallas with an unsuspecting traveler.

Hitchhiker Dies

Holdup man "Stash" Irwin robs the Apex Industrial Plastics Company of a $28,000 payroll, but is critically wounded while attempting to flee. He abandons his car, hides the money in a culvert, and hitches a ride with Warren Siddons (an Apex employee who is driving a nearly identical vehicle). After Irwin dies, Siddons is arrested at a Highway Patrol roadblock and appears to be complicit in the robbery, especially after Irwin's accomplices plant additional "evidence" in Siddons' home and office. Siddons steadfastly maintains his innocence in the face of seemingly overwhelming evidence to the contrary, and Dan Mathews and Officer Johnson eventually deduce that Siddons is either an innocent man or a fool. Betting on the former, they set a trap for Irwin's two accomplices.

Blast Area Copter

Nervous and neurotic gunman Joe White robs a rural gas station and shoots the attendant. He commandeers a car driven by a woman named Marge, but the car soon runs out of gas and he compels Marge to travel with him on foot into a deserted area. They hide in a small shack, but Joe is unaware that the area is deserted because it has been heavily laden with explosives and cleared in preparation for a huge blasting project that is to take place that afternoon. Dan Mathews uses the Highway Patrol helicopter to ensure that the blasting area is fully clear and notices that the door to the shack is open. When he investigates, Joe makes an ill-considered attempt to commandeer the helicopter, putting them all at risk unless communication can somehow be established with Sergeant Corey.

Dan Mathews gives a lift to Dr. Leonard, who is en route to the home of rancher Fred Bell. The doctor finds that Bell's 10-year-old son Johnny has gas gangrene and needs life-saving serum as quickly as possible. The serum must be delivered by air from a distant city and Bell's foreman Marty Gower offers to help Dan find his way to retrieve the serum from the airport over the rough back roads. Dan returns to the Bell household, but he bears injuries from an automobile accident and both the serum and Marty are missing. Marty was having financial problems and Dan suspects that he may have caused the accident deliberately so he could hold the serum for "ransom". Dan and Officer Abel backtrack from the location of the accident and discover that things are not always as they seem.

Officer Allard's Highway Patrol car is found abandoned and his body is discovered in the brush nearby. Auto painter Frank Handley tells Dan Mathews that Officer Allard was pursuing a car that he had been asked to paint quickly for no apparent reason. Dan learns that the car was registered to spinsterish bookstore owner Theo Nielson. Miss Nielson reluctantly reveals that she had recently given $10,000 to her "fiance" Larry Gardner and had loaned her car to his "brother" George. When Dan advises her that Larry Gardner is a convicted car thief and that George is the likely murderer of Officer Allard, she agrees to help set a trap for them. The two felons attempt to flee, but they soon find themselves bottled in by roadblocks.

Art Robbery

Working at the direction of George Mills, brothers Ed and Tony Wells hijack a panel truck carrying valuable paintings purchased by wealthy art collector Carter Giles. As Giles' trusted business manager, Mills provided the two with inside information concerning the truck's route. The plan was to steal the paintings and hold them for $500,000 in ransom, but the panel truck driver manages to escape in the Wells brothers' car and notify the Highway Patrol. The brothers panic, hijack a pickup truck, and escape after killing the driver and abandoning the paintings. Mills reluctantly agrees to hide the two at a house in the city, but when Dan Mathews convinces Giles to "pay" the ransom, Mills is certain that the Wells brothers have double-crossed him. Mills travels to the house to confront the brothers with a gun, unaware that Dan and Officer Dorsey are tailing him in the hope that he will lead them to the brothers and expose his own involvement.

12-year old Jimmy Adams needs an operation to correct his eyesight but is afraid of hospitals and runs away from home. Despite a bicycle accident caused by his faulty vision, Jimmy manages to make his way to his father's home in Ridgeley, but he runs away again when he becomes aware that the Highway Patrol is looking for him. He tries to hitchhike on a nearby highway, where he meets a transient named Gorman. When Gorman learns that Jimmy is a runaway, he is fearful of being caught with the boy and sends him up a secondary road near a sharp drop-off. A motorist's tip leads Dan Mathews to Gorman, and he learns that he may have only moments to prevent Jimmy from stumbling over the drop-off and onto the rocks below.

At a stoplight, he decides to commandeer a sports car driven by a young man but has to shoot and kill a Highway Patrol officer while making the switch. Dan Mathews orders roadblocks established for all major highways to contain Stankey, who abandons the sports car and restrains the driver before making his way on foot to a nearby farm owned by a couple named Edward and Mae. Stankey plans to steal the couple's car and escape, but Dan and Sergeant Moore arrive and quickly become aware that Stankey is in the house and is holding the couple at gunpoint. Dan has Sergeant Moore distract Stankey at the front of the house while he enters from the rear as part of a last-ditch effort to capture Stankey and rescue Edward and Mae.

When Dan Mathews confronts her with the many inconsistencies in her story, Molly admits that she was lying to try to save Crenshaw (her former fiancé) from execution. Surprisingly, an attempt is made on Molly's life after reporter Joe Macklin prematurely prints a story about her claims and includes her home address. Molly survives the attack, but Dan deduces that she may have unknowingly been correct about Crenshaw and that the real "Sunrise Park Killer" could still be at large. Dan stakes out Molly's home and eventually finds himself face to face with the pusillanimous killer.

The manager of the Folkston Bank notifies the Highway Patrol after he confirms that the bills were part of $90,000 taken during a bank robbery several months earlier. Dan Mathews deduces that Asa found the money hidden on his claim. The thief, Brownie Osborne, learns that his stolen largesse has been found and he goes after the old prospector with a rifle. Dan arrives at the claim and finds that he must take a chance on getting within handgun range of the better-armed Osborne to try to save the wounded and defenseless Asa.

Ultimately, Dan deduces that Julie left the lodge on her own to mail her letter to Santa Claus. He decides to focus the search on any costume-wearing "Santas" in the area. Dan's hunch proves correct when Julie wanders to a nearby rescue mission and asks the bell-ringing "Santa" for help.
