Season 2 Episode Guide

5 Episodes 1973 - 1974

Episode 1

A Hard Road to Vengeance

Sun, Nov 25, 1973 75 mins

New Prospect ramps up toward the dedication ceremony of a local legend, viewed as an innocent boy (of 21) shot dead by a cowardly scoundrel (actually a young outlaw with a price on his head brought down by the lawman whom he wounded). Raising statues to local heroes has become the rage and New Prospect doesn't want to miss its chance. The once-wounded lawman, his reputation tarnished, comes to set the record straight, but those who profit by the hype want to keep it going, and Deputy Ramsey wants to keep the peace as well as find a local girl gone missing.

Episode 2

The Detroit Connection

Sun, Dec 30, 1973 75 mins

A Detroit crime syndicate sets its sights on gaining footholds in New Prospect. Hec's first whiff of it comes from the death by arson of a poor farmer, one of three poor farmers who suddenly had a lot of unexplained cash to build oil wells on their lots in the last few weeks. Among the influx of visitors from Detroit (seeking to recruit/corrupt a trusted public figure), an attractive widow, who's trying to get away from it all, takes an interest in Deputy Ramsey.

Episode 3

Dead Heat

Sun, Feb 3, 1974 92 mins

Among new introductions to New Prospect (ice cream, a steam car and women's rights), the death of a well-liked healthy young man laid out on his bed puzzles Hec, Oliver and Amos. The scene is too neat, with wet blood on the sole of the dead man's boot, yet no blood on the floor. Surely the man was murdered and carried to his deathbed, but as to the method - that's harder to discern than pulling teeth. Speaking of which, Chief Stamp nurses a sore tooth.

Episode 4

Scar Tissue

Sun, Mar 10, 1974 98 mins

Who's that angry, young, good-on-the-eyes 20-something checking out every middle-aged man in town? He's Matthias Kane, a grown bastard who's come looking for his biological father following the death of his long-abandoned mother. As Mathias combs the town guided by an old photograph a description of his father's laugh, and his own raging temper, hefty ex-lawman Sam McDade, forced into retirement, arrives by stagecoach looking to work under Hec Ramsey. Unfortunately, Sam's authoritative strength has waned, and he can barely hold up his own modest suitcase let alone responsibilities for anything beyond a desk job.

Episode 5

Only Birds and Fools

Sun, Apr 7, 1974 98 mins

The New Prospect town counsel grants two inventors permission and $100 to build and demonstrate their glider that will allow Man to fly. A gruff stranger, who will later prove to have connections to the two men, also comes to town but is soon found murdered. While Hec determines if the connections are strong enough to throw suspicion on the two inventors, he also deals with the town drunk, who finds it hard to live with a secret in his past.
