John Ritter returns to TV in a genial sitcom, playing an aide to a senator (Gaynes). His life is somewhat complicated by his wife's (Post) father (Asner) having spent a long stretch in prison for financial impropriety, and her somewhat-unnecessary attempts to re-integrate him into society.

The baby is almost due and Georgie is apprehensive about it. Whilst waiting for the birth, Billy Bob becomes a hypochondriac after helping a patient suffering from a flesh-eating bacteria. When the baby doesn't look like what he expects, John is convinced that the babies have been swapped. He is convinced that their baby has been taken by a circus couple. When John sees some photos of Georgie's aunt, he sees where the ears come from.

Things get interesting when the ballet teacher wants John and Billy Bob to help by being trees in the recital coming up. Carson Lee raises a lamb in order to raise money. She becomes upset when she learns that it is going to be killed for food and wants her dad to buy it back. When the owner doesn't want to sell it back, Billy Bob convinces John to help steal it.

One of Georgie's supporters gives her a truck load of condoms, which upsets John. When he thinks that he sees her on Hard Copy, he becomes convinced that she murdered her husband. Madeline gives her a Rorschach test to find out about her personality.

John warms to her but Georgie becomes upset when she sees John and Diandra getting on well together. Suddenly, the marriage seems crowded.

Madeline suggests that all the office should have a weekly group therapy session to air any issues that concern them. The resentment remains long afterwards and the office becomes a nasty place, with different people not talking to each other. How's Madeline going to solve the new situation?

Lonnie's mother subscribes a number of readers to the Beacon, but to do so she makes a number of free offers that nobody else knows about or can afford.

Georgie hits the dry cleaning lady because she found her dress was being worn by another woman. Georgie is still having trouble with fitting in with the townies and still feels she is an outsider. She joins the library league when they look as though the local council are going to shut the library. In protest, she chains herself to the library door until they reopen it.
