Andy Griffith tackles socially relevant issues as the headmaster of a private coed high school. Viewers, however, didn't take to seeing Mayberry's down-home sheriff as a man of academia (Griffith himself called 'Headmaster' 'a very bad show'), so the actor returned to his Southern roots, beginning production on 'The New Andy Griffith Show,' about the mayor of a North Carolina town called Greenwood. It too was unsuccessful.
