The second season opens with Richmond Trinity Hospital in financial ruin, and out of business. Several staff members, including Chief Nursing Officer, Christina (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Chief of Surgery, Dr. Tom Wakefield (Michael Vartan), land employment at James River Hospital, a nearby hospital in a run-down neighborhood which is also facing potential closure. There, Christina promptly clashes with the former nursing supervisor, with whom she must now share responsibilities. Tom and Christina's complicated relationship is an overarching storyline in season two, which takes several abrupt twists and turns before culminating in an explosive season finale episode.
