He delivers, but Zoe's clumsy handling of the hypochondriac chases her last-minute, so George must take her place as singer, and saves the day. Meanwhile, Lemon tries to prove herself independent as a waitress.

So a reporter comes to check up, and is far from impressed by petty cases, and she desperately hopes that Wade's father started a leprosy epidemic, carried by a local armadillo. Gentlemanly George dares not refuse Shelby another date, which renders Lemon insanely jealous and desperate to sabotage it, even if that means a free shift as waitress after being duly fired.

Wade discovers that his ex Tansy lives in a mobile home on the town border, but can't charm or bully her to move in and vote for Lavon, but she accepts once George volunteers to launch her hairdressing career as showpiece celebrity client. George's never-voting ex Presley promises to do so; alas, it looks like the tie must be decided under crazy town bylaw by bloody duel or prophetic chicken, but actually it's a Breeland proxy.

When the football team needs collective treatment for athlete's-foot fungus, the coach begs her to talk to quarterback Max, who is a mess after his latest romantic breakup. He misunderstands that she's into him, and the town is furious that she tells Max before the crucial next game. George needs to coax a grim Judge by offering a perfect dinner, but AnnaBeth, whom he hired as best cook, is on war footing with Lemon, who has the managerial skills, so he must get them to team up for his sake, or for good. George makes a mess of Wade's experts tips to dump a clingy ex by "sandwich technique". Now that Lavon has been reelected mayor, he fears Ruby won't stay just for him, as she said in advance. So besides romantic efforts, he desperately tries to win her grumpy grandfather's approval by volunteering to do chores.

Dr. Breeland and the mayor each hoped to have found a mate, but by the time daughter Magnolia's hostility is turned, Emily Chase bails, and Ruby is interested in a headhunter's CEO job offer, using his "suspicion" as an excuse to accept in six months.

George is stuck with Wade's fierce ex, who makes him help steal back the dog she lost in divorce. Magnolia pushes Brick to enter and get stuck with a cellphone app-addicted teacher.

Wade grudgingly helps Zoe get one from his father Crazy Earl, who only agrees if he can resume the Santa part he gave up after his wife's death drove him to drink. A ring left in the Joseph suit starts the rumor that George is about to propose to Tansy, but it's Lavon's desperate attempt to persuade Ruby to stay. Zoe gets caught in ill-conceived lies to pretend to her mother that she's a total success, but her mom actually gives her the needed nudge to humbly make up with Wade.

The flu ruins everyone's plans, even Lemon's elaborate dinner for Walter, yet Zoe's greatest shock is who brought it in and why.

Zoe gets jealously suspicious of the replacement Wade also arranged for her: popular Harvard graduate Jonah, Brick's handsome cousin, who actually understands her and turns out to be the surprise gift at Brick's surprise birthday party. Organizing it was the bone of contention between Lemon, who tried to swear off manipulative meddling, and Magnolia, who counted on big sister's busybody talents to get rid of Shelby as Brick's potential bride, with a saucy "surprise" result.

George pierces Wade's gallant-ride-after-broken-down-car-battery story, leading to Zoe dumping Wade after he admits a drunk, meaningless night. Crickett drags listless Lemon to a Gypsy fortuneteller, who says she already met her true love, which seems to fit town nut Dale King, but she ultimately makes up instead with AnnaBeth.

Jonah makes a lighthearted move on Zoe and helps her see sense after she precipitously deduces from contagious throat infections that Max must have cheated on Rose with a girl who can't even stand him. While Magnolia sells out for a car, Lemon drags George along to Shelby's home auction in search of proof it's a gold-digger, but utterly fails to scare off Brick.

Tom and Wanda's new beekeeper job doesn't allow starring in the annual Shakespearean production, so George and Zoe end up cast as Romeo and Juliet. In annual free therapy, Brick insists to help Lavon over traumatic stage fright.

Despite Jonah's efforts to preserve medical confidentiality, Zoe steals the file he refuses to show her and finds it's Brick's brain-tumor diagnosis. Convinced that he needs the comforting certainty of home support, she presses Shelby to stand by Brick, which only makes her panic and run.

Max and Rose arrange a date with his father, also reluctantly commandeered as school ball chaperon, but even he soon chases hopeless Zoe.
