Joseph and Anna Bresner were Lithuanian immigrants who came to New York City to live in 1909. Every episode opened with an octogenarian Joseph narrating an episode from his past when he and Anna were struggling to survive in a new country, new culture and new language. Sidney and Ida were the Bresners' friendly neighbors in Manhattan; Louis and Leo were also friends.
