The race was boycotted for ten teams as part of a political war involving FISA and FOCA. Only seven teams to compete, giving a field of fourteen cars. Pironi disobeyed team orders and overtook Villeneuve for take to win.

Villeneuve was killed during the closing stages of qualification and Ferrari instantly withdrew from the race.

The race lead changed hands four times in just three laps at the end and Riccardo Patrese was the lucky one, taking his first-ever win. Only five cars crossed the finish line.
