Season 13 of the reality show features the return of 12 former contestants who get another chance at winning the competition. Actress McKenzie Westmore is back as host, joined by her father Michael Westmore as mentor and by Ve Neill, Glenn Hetrick and Neville Page as judges; among the guest judges are actor Doug Jones and makeup artist Rick Baker. In the first few episodes, contestants go head-to-head to eliminate each other, facing challenges such as creating characters inspired by Aztec Gods or by Guillermo del Toro's aesthetic.
