Matt's tacky game show 'The Box' is a ratings hit but also a poisoned chalice as it prevents him from returning to the acting work he loves. Beverly and Sean are equally unhappy at having to work with the fatuous, slave-driving Tim whilst Beverly is shocked to find that Carol has shut herself in her house now that she is jobless. Matt finds some diversion by having sex with Danika from 'The Box' but unfortunately Merc Lapidus finds out and takes full advantage of the situation.

After Matt's sex play with Danika has gone viral he faces the sack from Merc whilst Beverly is still vainly trying to help the reclusive Carol. Matt's appeal to network head Elliot Salad does not work to his advantage as sponsors withdraw their support for the show. However the resultant controversy results in a vast improvement in its ratings and Matt is reinstated. Meanwhile Beverly and Sean try to persuade Tim to employ a wheelchair-bound actor for their new sitcom.

Whilst Matt's notoriety brings him new sitcom offers his ex-wife demands he explains himself to his sons though he does not handle it well. Beverly's attempt to coax Carol out of the house also ends badly with Merc having more success. The Lincolns finally break up with Tim but their agreement to write a new show for Matt leaves them questioning their decision.

Beverly is delighted to find that Carol has left her house - until she learns who coaxed her out, especially as, unbeknown to Carol, the newly-divorced Merc is engaged to Morning Randolph. Nonetheless she joins Sean at Matt's lavish ranch to discuss their new project, which Matt wants to name 'Whores'. Unwisely he also lets them use his gun.

After Beverly awkwardly tells the pregnant Carol of Merc's engagement she and Sean are present when Matt gets a call to say his father has just died. They are surprised by his lack of emotion whilst having to deal with his father's irate girlfriend, who is at odds with his mother over the funeral arrangements. This leads to a subterfuge from Matt and an anecdote which gives the Lincolns an idea for a new show.

The Lincolns' new show for Matt meets with general approval though they are annoyed to learn that Matt has a production company which allows him to be given a writing credit, despite his contributing nothing. Sean aims for a compromise whilst Carol tells Beverly she is moving to Michigan to raise her child on her own.

The Final Episode

Beverly and Sean are appalled to learn that Matt has rejected their script and signed up for another show, leaving them jobless. However Sean has a plan to get them back on board by touching a nerve with Matt, thus giving them the upper hand and a new sitcom. Beverly also - inadvertently - reunites Helen and Carol.
