13 Episodes 2008 - 2008
Eli Stone (Jonny Lee Miller) is an ethically challenged San Francisco lawyer, who, through a series of visions brought on by a life-threatening brain aneurysm, begins to change for the better.\ In the whimsical comedy-drama's first season, those hallucinations frequently showcase pop singer George Michael. Indeed, all 13 episodes are named after his songs. Eli works at Wethersby, Posner & Klein, which handles the business of wealthy clients, and one of its partners, Jordan Wethersby (Victor Garber), happens to be the father of Eli's fiancée Taylor (Natasha Henstridge), also a lawyer (who joins the firm in Episode 5). Eli's condition is a source of considerable stress, but he is not alone in his plight. His brother Nathan (Matt Letscher) is a neurologist who recognizes the seriousness of Eli's condition; and Dr. Chen (James Saito), an acupuncturist and Eastern mystic, believes Eli may be a prophet. Eli also finds allies at work in Patti (Loretta Devine), his sassy, but devoted, assistant, and Maggie (Julie Gonzalo), an ambitious junior associate who encourages Eli's emerging spiritual side. Of course, Eli's transformation from an unscrupulous attorney to a man with a conscience about the world's injustices, exemplified in cases involving medical malpractice, corporate malfeasance and, in general, the rights of the oppressed, doesn't sit well with the other names on the firm's letterhead, Martin Posner (Tom Amandes) and Marci Klein (Katey Sagal). They frown on his altruistic nature and even question his sanity. George Michael appears as himself in several episodes, including "I Want Your Sex," about free speech in schools, and Tom Cavanagh guest stars in flashbacks as Eli and Nathan's father. The cast also features Jason George, Sam Jaeger and Laura Benanti.
