Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Nicholas are not entirely in favor of the wedding or marriage; their thoughts are with their late mother.

In preparation for the wedding, Abby's elitist parents come to town from Pasadena. The bachelor party and bridal shower take place. Tommy continues to try to make a wedding gift from some wood he has. Abby visits Elizabeth at David's place where she has been staying and asks her to be her maid of honor and their rift is mended; Nicholas comes around as well. To keep the peace, the ceremony is performed by two ministers, an older one and a younger one.

Tom wins a journalistic award which takes the Bradfords to San Francisco. Once there, Abby meets with an old flame on the board of admissions at the medical school to advocate for Mary, who has recently been wait-listed. During their time in the big city, Tom has a fallout with the family based on their constant protests to his way of parenting. This episode was filmed on location in the Bay Area.
