What would you do if tomorrow's paper came to your door today? If you knew that you were going to die? Be lucky in love, unlucky in life? That's what Gary Hobson must ask himself every day. Gary is a stockbroker who got fired from his job; his wife found him uninteresting and kicked him out. You see, it's quite simple. Every day an orange cat comes to his door with a "Chicago Sun-Times". Gary doesn't know where it comes from. He did a bit of research and found out that a man named Lucious Snow, an old typesetter, he had the paper before Gary. The day after Snow died, the paper came to Gary. Gary has two friends. Chuck Fishman, who has been best buds with Gary since college, wants Gary to give him the scores of games, winning lotto numbers, stocks, or even soap-opera tips. Gary's blind friend Marissa helps him make all the right choices.

The Out-of-Towner

Gary gets the paper and initially there a lot of things he has to fix but when he gets there, there's nothing to fix. He thinks the paper is playing games with him so the next time the paper tells him of something he goes there and does nothing and someone gets hurt. Eventually Gary meets a guy from New York who also gets an "Early Edition" of his own.

Gary's parents visit Chicago and want to spend the day with him. Gary runs off to save ducks crossing the streets. When a cameraman snaps a picture, it shows up in the paper and starts a chain of reactions. Gary's parents are held hostage.

Chuck comes for a visit and offers to take Gary to a Cubs game wherein a promising rookie Pedro Mendoza is going to play. But Gary finds himself trying to help the owner of a restaurant who borrowed money from a loan shark who is demanding ownership in the restaurant as payment. And it seems that the owner of the restaurant and Mendoza are linked.

To stop something that's in the paper Gary assumes someone else's identity but it turns out that the identity he assumed was that of an undercover cop who's working with Brigatti. Gary has to continue being that person. Brigatti is searching for a jewel thief known as the Iceman, and she thinks it's a guy named Paul Kettler.

Gary saves a cold, heartless reporter, who doesn't care about whom his stories affect, from someone he wrote about. Gary's act sparks the guy's interest and finds out about the things Gary does. He tells Gary he can explain to him or he can find out on his own and the man is relentless. The paper tells Gary that the man will be killed so he tries to warn him which he takes as a threat. Gary convinces the reporter to change the time for his meeting and Gary goes to make sure nothing happens to him but the man is still killed and Gary is arrested.

Fatal Edition: Part 2

Gary is in custody and when the evidence points to him, an incident gives him the opportunity to escape. He gets the paper and it points him to a guy who is one of the dead reporter's sources. When someone tries to kill him Gary saves him. He tells Gary that he told the reporter he heard something about a guy who says he can get rid of anyone and make sure it doesn't look like a or that it's not deemed a homicide. Gary then turns to Diaz for help. And they get the reporter's notes and they see he may have been onto something. Later he comes face to face with Brigatti and he convinces her to look into what he found. Later the paper tells Gary that Brigatti will be killed and tries to save her.

A pretty television weather girl seems to always forecast wrong, so Gary steps in to help. After days of helping, the newspaper stops giving the weather forecast, and the reporter gets fired just as a major storm is about it hit.

Things get hectic at McGinty's, and Marissa tells Gary he needs to start helping out at the restaurant. Gary tries to find a compromise between the restaurant and the newspaper. He is unable to help Marissa when she is hit by a car.

Chuck comes back to Chicago and announces he's engaged to a girl named Jade. When Gary meets her, he's shocked because Jade is Amber, the jewel thief he encountered a while ago and allowed to escape. Gary's not sure what to do especially when Detective Brigatti whose career was nearly ruined by her learns she's back and wants to take her down.

And in it was the story of a boy from Indiana who was killed in an accident, named Gary Hobson. Gary tries to remember what were the circumstances of Lucious saving him. He also learns that Detective Armstrong is putting his career on the line to get a rich, spoiled who uses his money and influence to get off whatever trouble he gets into. Gary eventually learns that both, Lucious saving his life and the man Armstrong is trying to get is linked.

And when he helps someone the paper tells him to, he ruins a woman's chances of winning the lottery. That's when she comes to him, telling him that he owes her. So she lets him stay with him and claims that they're engaged. She's Irish and her family is extremely traditional and they don't like her being alone in the U.S. Her brother shows up and drives Gary nuts. And when Gary's mother shows up and likes the girl. She eventually tells Gary she wants to him to help her find the guy she really likes. The problem is, he doesn't know her.
