Mark Saber

Mark Saber refers to a half-hour 1950s detective television series that took different forms and titles during its run. Tom Conway portrayed Mark Saber as a plainclothes English detective working with the Homicide Division of the N.Y.P.D. in Mystery Theater which aired on ABC from October 1951 to June 1954. Donald Gray portrayed Mark Saber as a one-armed private detective based in London in The Vise which aired on ABC from September 1955 to June 1957. Donald Gray also portrayed Mark Saber in Saber of London which aired on NBC from October 1957 to May 1960.

Goodyear Playhouse

Producer Fred Coe's golden-age series was originally called Goodyear TV Playhouse, but shortened its title in 1955. Produced live in New York until 1957, it was also trimmed from one hour to 30 minutes, renamed Goodyear Theater, and switched to filmed performances. Through it all, the productions were often lauded, and included two classic works by Paddy Chayefsky: Marty (1953), starring Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand, and The Catered Affair (1955), with Thelma Ritter.

If nothing else (and there really wasn't much else), this TV version of the classic had a good cast, including Ray Liotta as the bartender Sacha, Hector Elizondo as Capt. Renault and Scatman Crothers as Sam. An earlier, equally forgettable version of the beloved movie aired in the 1950s.
