After the wedding date's been set, the Duke receives a letter from an old friend who just read the newspaper announcement. It accuses Cathcart of being a card cheat in France. Templers flare, and Cathcart breaks off the engagement and leaves the house. When he is found shot to death, suspicion falls on Denver, and he's arrested.

Wimsey becomes stuck in quicksand and needs the help of Bunter and two of Grimthorpe's farmhands to survive. Mrs. Grimthorpe convinces her misanthropic husband to allow Wimsey to recover there, where he discovers a piece of evidence that is crucial to his brother's defense.

If he cannot get back in time to submit the evidence, Sir Impey Biggs, the Duke's defense counsel, will have to call Mrs. Grimthorpe as an alibi witness. The Duke is dead set against that as it will ruin his own marriage and put the lady in physical danger from her misanthropic, pathologically jealous husband.
