Meanwhile, Ruby Mae's estranged father returns leaving Ruby Mae disillusioned about herself until she discovers her relation to a famous heroine.

Miss Alice receives an invitation to attend the birthday celebration of her dear friend Joseph Scott in Freedom, Kentucky. Nervous about the journey, she asks Christy to accompany her. Christy accepts and upon their arrival she is surprised to find that Freedom is a Negro community. Miss Alice and Christy acquaint themselves with Daniel Scott, Joseph's son, who aspires be a doctor and learn that Joseph is dying of heart failure. Daniel and Miss Alice make their peace with Joseph and he passes away peacefully. Daniel makes arrangements to travel to Cutter Gap with Christy and Miss Alice where he hopes to gain and apprenticeship with Dr. MacNeil. Meanwhile, David and Dr. MacNeil bond unexpectedly while discussing their common interests namely, Christy.
