Season 5 of the cable dramedy that chronicles the carnal escapades of New York City novelist Hank Moody (David Duchovny) jumps ahead a few years with Hank now living in New York but hoping to relocate. The opportunity arrives via an invitation from Charlie to come to L.A. to write a screenplay for a project starring rapper-turned-actor Samurai Apocalypse (RZA). Upon his return, the prodigal novelist reunites with Karen (Natascha McElhone) and her new husband (Jason Beghe) and discovers Becca (Madeleine Martin) has a boyfriend (Scott Michael Foster) who bears an uncanny resemblance to her father, and may unfortunately share some of his relationship proclivities. In the fifth-season finale, Hank walks into a bar filled with shadowy figures and a bartender who is a long-departed friend. He begins to suspect this isn't California anymore, but one helluva place to kill some time.

Later, Holly turns up at Karen's door and Hank acts as if the intruder is his new girlfriend; and Becca gets upset when Holly shows interest in her boyfriend, Tyler.
