The fifth and final season of the Prohibition-era drama opens in 1931 with Nucky (Steve Buscemi) and Sally (Patricia Arquette) in Cuba, investing in the rum business and banking on the inevitable repeal of the 18th Amendment in the U.S. In Chicago, Eli (Shea Whigham) and Nelson (Michael Shannon) toil away as bagmen for Al Capone (Stephen Graham) as the Feds work to take Scarface down; while in New York City, Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) finds success in the financial sector but is haunted by the legacy of the late Arnold Rothstein, whose protégés, Lucky (Vincent Piazza) and Meyer (Anatol Yusef), seek to strengthen their grip on organized crime; and, out in the middle of nowhere, Chalky (Michael K. Williams) breaks free of a chain gang in hopes of one last showdown with his archenemy, Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright). In addition, flashbacks to 19th-century Atlantic City chart Nucky's childhood, courtship of Mabel (Maya Kazan) and introduction to the Commodore (John Ellison Conlee).
