Blandings Castle is dysfunction junction, the home of a chaotic family struggling to keep itself in order. Clarence Threepwood, Ninth Earl of Emsworth and master of Blandings Castle, yearns with all his soul to be left in peace; preferably in the company of his beloved pig, The Empress. But he never is. There is always someone who wants him to do something. Presiding over the blitzkrieg on his equilibrium is the baleful figure of his sister Connie, with whom he shares the house; at her shoulder is Clarence's brainless younger son Freddie and a panoply of friends, enemies, servants, spongers, private detectives, bookies, and confidence tricksters.

Sticky Wicket at Blandings

Connie hopes to impress the celebrated explorer Colonel Fanshawe - the lord lieutenant of the county - in the hopes that he will name Clarence as his successor. However when Fanshawe visits with his daughter Valerie Angus is shooting rabbits and Beach has taken sleeping pills he thought were vitamin tablets and keeps dropping off whilst Freddie is trying to teach Muggsy, a dog he is minding for an aunt, to sing. Valerie takes a shine to Muggsy and steals him so Clarence and Beach launch a rescue bid, which goes wrong. Fortunately Angus saves the day - and the dog. In the event Clarence does not get the appointment, much to his relief.

Necessary Rhino

An American heiress Vanessa Polk comes to Blandings to paint Clarence with the Empress whilst choleric Lord Didcot arrives to demand he return the fifty pounds he paid for a supposed Old Master he believes is a fake. Galahad spots that Vanessa is the fake, a penniless fortune-hunter but they both see that Didcot's painting is genuine and priceless. However he believes they are discussing a picture of a horse Freddie is trying to sell and pays him for it. Galahad also manoeuvres him into paying off Vanessa for breach of contract after he proposes and then withdraws the offer on discovering her financial situation.
Episode 7
Custody of the Pumpkin

The rivalry between Clarence and Parsloe intensifies as each plans to enter a giant pumpkin for the local produce show, and with Clarence's offering, known as Desdemona, looking the better one, Parsloe is anxious to pilfer the Blandings gardener Angus. Meanwhile Connie seeks a solution by marrying Freddie to Parsloe's butch niece Felicity but he only has eyes for spirited Niagara Donaldson, the niece of Angus but - unknown to Connie - an heiress. Connie's disapproval swiftly evaporates on hearing this news as Angus returns to Blandings and Desdemona wins the first prize.
