Episode 1

The Tornado

An approaching tornado places the lives of several Apple family members in grave danger. After ushering the children into the storm cellar for safety, George is severely injured by a collapsed beam. Meanwhile, driving on an errand, Barbara and Grandfather Aldon crash their car while trying to avoid a tree felled by the storm.

The Circus

Feeling alienated by her distracted parents and the taunts of her siblings, who tease her with the idea that she's adopted, an upset Patricia decides to run away from home and join a traveling circus visiting Appleton. There she meets circus employees Claudine Delacourt and Mr. Alfredd who are instrumental in solving not only Patricia's problem, but the dilemma distracting George, a lack of funding for the town's foster home.

The Friend

George is worried about the future of the local paper when it's about to be purchased by a national chain. He impulsively uses his life savings to buy it himself without consulting his family. He must deal with a variety of primarily negative reactions.

The Returning

The son of an old friend of George's, 20-year-old Ben Haggerty, is paroled from prison in Apple's custody with the hope that living with the Apple family will aid his rehabilitation.

Paul falls hard for Jane Huston, a beautiful slightly-older woman who's visiting the area. As she prepares to return to New York City, he believes he's found true love and is determined to go with her although his parents are against it.

The Winning Season

Paul is injured while playing football. His doctor tells him that he needs time to heal, but a big game is coming up. The doctor says that if he plays and is injured, his current injury could be aggravated. George tells Paul that he cannot play, but Paul doesn't feel that it's anyone's decision but his own.

The Real Thanksgiving

George's meticulous plans for the family's first major holiday in Appleton appear to be spoiled when Paul and Cathy receive an invitation to spend Thanksgiving with friends in California. His disappointment at their decision to go quickly becomes concern when the private plane transporting them loses contact. Meanwhile, Paul and Cathy fight for survival after the plane crashes in a remote area.
