4 Episodes 2010 - 2010
The tumultuous 20th century is seen through the eyes of the lustful Logan Mountstuart (played, at various ages, by Sam Claflin, Matthew Macfadyen and Jim Broadbent) in this absorbing drama, which was adapted by William Boyd from his 2002 novel of the same name. It opens with the elderly Logan sifting through his past, from his first memory to his university years at Oxford, when he pursued literature and a pal's girlfriend (Holliday Grainger). Later episodes find him spying on the duke and duchess of Windsor (Tom Hollander, Gillian Anderson) after he's recruited into the intelligence service by old friend Ian Fleming (Tobias Menzies); working at an NYC art gallery, drinking too much and seeing a shrink (Richard Schiff); and, in the finale, applying for a position with a hospital lobby group that, he learns, is a front for an anti-capitalism terrorist cell. He also inherits a villa in the French countryside, where he makes a friend (Valerie Kaprisky) and begins work on a book about his life.
