The personal and professional lives of the staff of Ward 17 at the All Saints Western General Hospital are followed in Series 1 of this medical drama. The ward, known as the "garbage ward" as it takes the overflow from the hospital's other wards, is run by Sister Terri Sullivan (Georgie Parker). She is assisted by her second-in-charge Stephanie "Steph" Markham (Libby Tanner), registered nurses Connor Costello (Jeremy Cumpston) and Bronwyn "Bron" Craig, and feisty enrolled nurse Yvonne "Von" Ryan (Judith McGrath). Luciano "Luke" Forlano (Martin Lynes) and Peter Morrison (Andrew McKaige) are the doctors that frequently assist the staff of Ward 17 and Jazmina "Jaz" Hillerman takes care of the paperwork as the ward clerk. Some of the series' plot points include Peter struggling to deal with the death of his wife; Bron clashing with the new head of cardiothoracic surgery and deciding to make a career change; Steph and her husband Ben (Brian Vriends) experiencing a life-altering event; and Terri finding her faith in God being tested when her best friend and fellow nun is admitted to hospital.
