Episode 1

John Eaves - Star Trek concept illustrator, designer and model maker

Lili and Bryan have a very special guest joining them for the season premiere of A Captain's Log. Together, our adventurous hosts interview the longest-serving official live-action production staffer and 2021 Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement award winner, John Eaves. In the 80's, he started working on Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier and continued on projects during the 90s, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and First Contact. Eaves' work continued into the 2000's when he worked on the sketch concept design for the Enterprise NX-01 in the show Star Trek: Enterprise, into 2017's Discovery, as well as Picard in 2022. John gives a lot of insight into what it was like working behind the scenes and making the world of Star Trek come to life on his different projects throughout the years. John has also worked on other exciting projects outside of Star Trek, such as Top Gun, Invaders from Mars, The Hunt for Red October, Scandal, and a few Marvel projects as well. John covers his recent book as well as his early career working on models with Greg Jein. Bryan and Lili also discuss the new art look for upcoming episodes.

Our hosts, Lili Fox Lim and Bryan Kreutz, continue their incredible interview with special guest John Eaves. In this conversation, we hear from Star Trek's longest-running staff member and his great stories working on concept art, illustrations, and model making. John talks in depth about working on Star Trek Projects from 1989 through 2022. We hear how he got his start working on Deep Space Nine as a production illustrator and how he incorporated his love of making models into that role. Bryan and Lili ask interesting questions about what it was like working with JJ Abrams, as well as working for Paramount on so many Star Trek TV Series. We find out his influences when designing iconic props like the Phaser weapons in Star Trek: Enterprise. John also gives Bryan and Lili insight into what it was like working in a production role that has had so many technological improvements over the years.

Del Arco brings along his co-author, Trisha DeFazio, and Illustrator Adria Alvarado to discuss the collaboration that went into getting their book published. The trio also discusses the importance of releasing a story like "Freddy the Alien" in today's world. Jonathan also dives into his role at Ricky Diaz on Miami Vice and what it was like working with NBC. They wrap up part one of this exciting interview, talking about the audition process at Paramount for Star Trek.

As the questions keep rolling, we find intriguing insight into what it was like on set while shooting for Star Trek: Picard.
