What Celli tells them is that despite his trappings of wealth, he actually has no money, and doesn't want this fact getting around, especially to his long time associates. All avenues Celli tries to get the money from family and friends fail. Feeling like he is now worthless in having no respect among his associates, Celli, to regain his pride, proposes getting back into "the business" with Harry and his gang to the tune of $5 million, with the caveat that he is the boss with the others operating under his supervision. Calling in his old friend Professor Samuels from Philadelphia who has masterminded many a plot in Celli's past, they embark on a plan to steal platinum ingots in transit by train destined to the port of Taranto, they in turn needing $3,000 seed money for expenses which they don't have and thus have to steal from somewhere. They hit one problem after another largely in the ineptitude of Harry's gang of novices, who he hired in holding up Celli precisely because they had no criminal background: Cockney Davey Collins, a mechanic by trade who married an Italian woman, they now with eleven children; Benny Brownstead, a classical violinist who is unemployed most of the time; and Antonio Tozzi, a chef who is trying to get out of the food business since he is overweight, his fiancée who refuses to marry him until he loses 100 pounds. The last in the gang is Harry's girlfriend, Juliana, who, beyond dreaming of the exotic places she and Harry will go with their riches, has a special mission bestowed upon her by Harry in using her feminine wiles on Celli for some information. The question becomes whether all the wrongs they encounter will end up with a right at the end.

In their initial encounters, John and Bree do whatever they can to exert their psychological dominance over the other, especially as Bree initially refused to even speak to him. Despite their less than friendly start, they embark on a personal relationship based on emotional need, but it is a relationship Bree tries to sabotage because of those same issues which causes her to turn tricks. As they follow the leads through Bree's call girl world, they know they're getting close to finding the truth when someone continues to torment Bree. They believe the key to Tom's disappearance is a violent john who tried to kill her a few years earlier when Tom disappeared but who she doesn't remember. The questions become whether John and Bree can discover his identity and stop him before he tries to kill Bree again, and whether there is a future for them together.

Because of a feature article on him in the Advocate, Albany based Donald Strachey has gained some notoriety as a gay private detective. His latest client, Paul Hale, a scared young man, provides Donald with a $5,000 retainer to find "someone", that person unspecified before Paul is scared off. Soon thereafter, Paul is found dead. The official cause of death is deemed suicide by the coroner's office, but Donald wants to do right by Paul by finding who killed him as the police unofficially believe he was murdered. Another person who believes Paul was murdered is his mother, Phyllis Hale. Donald learns that homophobic Mrs. Hale sent Paul to the Phoenix Foundation, run by Dr. Trevor Cornell and his wife Lynn Cornell and for which Paul was the poster child. The Foundation's raison d'etre is repairative therapy i.e. to help people turn from gay to straight. Donald believes Paul's death has something to do with the Foundation, whether it be a connection to one of the Cornells or one of the other patients. As such, Donald goes undercover as a patient at the Foundation to find the killer. This case ends up hitting home for him as he opens up for the first time to his partner Tim Callaghan about his own less than happy gay past.

Three San Quentin escapees (Penny, Hastings and Morgan) kill a cop in a gas-station holdup. Wounded, Morgan flees through black-shadowed streets to the handiest refuge: with former cellmate Steve Lacey, who's paroled, with a new life and lovely wife, and can't afford to be caught associating with old cronies. But homicide detective Sims wants to use Steve to help him catch Penny and Hastings, who in turn extort his help in a bank job. Is there no way out for Steve?
