Harry Barnett is a failed businessman who used to run a garage until he went bankrupt. He is now living on the island of Rhodes, looking after the villa of a friend, Alan Dysart, a former government minister. After Heather Mallender, a young woman who is staying at Dysart's villa, goes missing, Harry is accused of her murder. He is determined to prove that she is still alive and to discover why she has vanished. He returns to England and, armed only with a set of photographs that she took, retraces her steps. In doing so, he gradually uncovers a conspiracy which implicates Dysart in the murder of Heather's sister.

Dr. Sullivan ("Dr. T") Travis is a wealthy Dallas gynecologist for some of the wealthiest women in Texas who finds his idealist life beginning to fall apart, starting when his wife Kate suffers a nervous breakdown and is committed to the state mental hospital. His sister-in-law Peggy meddles in every situation she encounters. Only one woman, golf instructor Bree, offers Dr. T any comfort or salvation.

Tuesday, June 4, 1968: the California Presidential primary. As day breaks, Robert F. Kennedy arrives at the Ambassador Hotel. He'll campaign, then speak to supporters at midnight. Vignettes at the hotel capture the texture of the late 1960s: a couple marries so that the groom can avoid Vietnam, kitchen staff discuss race and baseball, a man cheats on his wife, another is fired for racism, a retired hotel doorman plays chess in the lobby with an old friend, a campaign strategist's wife needs a pair of black shoes, two campaign staff trip on LSD, a lounge singer is on the downhill slide. Through it all, R.F.K. calls for a better society and a better nation.

They soon find out that Zach is, among other things, a racist neo-Nazi, which brings up a potentially dangerous situation for Jewish Marc and Black Luke. After some physical altercations and verbal threats, Marc ends up stabbing Zach dead out of what he considers self-defense. As the friends discuss what to do about Zach, they finally come to the conclusion that in killing Zach, they have done society a service. So they ponder: "why not invite other ultra-conservatives with extreme views to dinner to do the same to them"? Several dinner parties and deaths later, they think they've hit the jackpot when they meet powerful ultra-conservative broadcaster Norman Arbuthnot and invite him to dinner. But their plans unravel wen they can't agree on who deserves to die; and they're also threatened by Sheriff Alice Stanley, who isn't looking for the five's victims, but is nevertheless nosing around as she works on a missing-girl case.

Jeff Cole is a recent graduate of the Cincinnati police academy who dreams of working undercover. His wish is granted and through success is given the task of taking down state-wide crack dealer Dwayne Gittens aka "God". The ultimate abuse comes in the form of talk of George and Martha's unseen sixteen-year-old son, whose birthday is the following day.
