American missionary Megan Davis arrives in Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War to marry the missionary Dr. Robert Strife. However, Robert postpones their wedding to rescue some orphans in an orphanage in Chapei section that is burning in the middle of a battlefield. While returning to Shanghai with the children, they are separated in the crowd, Megan is hit in the head and knocked out, but is saved by General Yen and brought by train to his palace. As the days go by, the General's mistress Mah-Li becomes close to Megan and when she is accused of betrayal for giving classified information to the enemies, Megan asks for her life. The cruel General Yen falls in love with naive, pure Megan and accepts her request to spare the life of Mah-Li against the will of his financial advisor Jones. Meanwhile, Megan feels attracted by the powerful but gentle General Yen, but resists to his flirtation. When Mah-Li betrays General Yen and destroys his empire, Megan realizes that to be able to do good works, one has to have wisdom and decides to stay with him while the General drinks his bitter last tea.

In this film that closely parallels his own life story, Richard Pryor plays Jo Jo Dancer, a popular stand-up comedian who has severely burned himself in a drug incident. As he lies unconscious in a hospital, his spiritual alter ego gets up and begins a journey of his own. He revisits his life, from growing up in a brothel as a child and struggling to beat the long odds to become a top rated comedian. However, his success brings new problems as he develops a tragic pattern of substance abuse that begins to screw up his life. All the while, Jo Jo's spirit watches these events and attempts to convince his past self to turn off from his path of self destruction.

A group of office workers decide to have a party in the office building. Among other things, they want to have some drugs there. Their conversation on the subject is overheard by Joe Vickers, which is rather unfortunate for them, since Joe Vickers is a policeman. Even more unfortunate is the fact that Vickers is also an undead psychotic satanist, and instead of arresting them, he will make sure that nobody leaves the party alive...

An American art dealer (Miguel Sandoval), who specializes in southwestern topaz, arrives by train in Liverpool. Similarly, a very proper British art dealer (Alex Cox), who specializes in African art, arrives in the same hotel. The two meet in the hotel's abandoned restaurant and decide to set off in finding an evening meal, which becomes problematic immediately when the Brit reveals he is vegetarian. While following their pursuit of a mutually acceptable meal, the main point of the film is their discourse en route to their various attempts at an eatery.

The film opens at a carnival with a barker calling for onlookers to enter the tent where an audience member will fight one of the professional boxers. In a setup, a trained amateur boxer takes the ring and knocks out one of the pros. The boxer, Johnny Flanagan played by Tony Wright, impresses the carnival promoter such that he takes young Flanagan under his wing in an attempt to launch a comeback into prizefighting. Enter Giuseppe Vecchi a wealthy Italian former promoter with the connections to back the fighter. Flanagan's future looks promising until he meets Giuseppe's wife Lorna Vecchi. Lorna, played by Barbara Payton, married her rich and doting husband when he owned a club where she was a dancer. She's a true trophy wife all too eager to show her displeasure at her jovial husband's eccentricities. The first time Flanagan lays eyes on Lorna it's clear he is ripe for seduction. And seduction is clearly on Lorna's mind, evident as she licks her lips while her eyes scan Flanagan's shirtless, sweaty body during a bout. He may beat opponents in the ring, but Flanagan doesn't stand a chance against Lorna. Lorna gets what she wants and soon she's embroiled in an affair with Flanigan. Determined to make herself a wealthy widow, she hatches a scheme to entice her lover to kill Giuseppe. Two murders follow, both orchestrated by Lorna. She gets her comeuppance, but only after ruining everyone's friendships, family and future. She's one bad blonde.

Anne, who is organizing a fundraiser for a new housing project for youth at risk in working for a drug counseling center, is all about appearance. Their thirteen year old daughter Megan Burrows, hates her mother in Anne trying to control everything to her perfect, upscale, west side sensibility, shy Megan who has not been able to find her voice as a result. The second couple is Sarah and Doug Cameron, who have just bought their first house in the working class neighborhood of Mount Pleasant on the east side. Sarah is Anne's colleague working in human resources at the drug counseling center, while Doug is a work and stay-at-home dad looking after their adolescent daughter, Courtney Cameron. While Sarah and Doug love each other, their marriage may not be able to survive something that happens to Courtney largely a result of the neighborhood in which they live. An outcome of this issue is that Doug wants to rid Mount Pleasant of all the social ills associated with their neighborhood, especially as it concerns his family and almost at the expense of all else, while Sarah, who deals in social issues for work, hates that what has happened to Courtney may affect her empathy professionally. And the third couple is sixteen year old Nadia and her boyfriend Nick. Nick is a hard core drug addict who steals to support his habit, while Nadia, who also does drugs, hooks on the side, she often standing on a street corner of Mount Pleasant. While most of their money goes to drugs, Nadia has a goal of saving enough money for the two of them to go to Thailand. Following the recent passing of her father, the only family Nadia has left is her older sister Marya, who tries to tread the fine line of family, Nadia versus her yet unborn child. One of Nadia's regular Johns is Stephen, who can no longer do it with Anne in feeling much what Megan is feeling, Anne who is oblivious to both her husband and daughter's true feelings toward her beyond Stephen not being able to "get it up", which she believes is solely something that men of Stephen's age sometimes go through.

Awkward teenager Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin) has trouble fitting in at a new high school. Charlie needs some friends fast, and decides that the best way to find them is to appoint himself the resident psychiatrist. He becomes one of the most popular guys in school by doling out advice and, occasionally, medication, to the student body.

Newly arrived in an up-market housing development, quiet ten-year-old Devon doesn't quite fit in. Ignoring the urgings of her social-climbing father, Devon chooses the company of Trent, who mows the estate's lawns, rather than of the girls her own age. Their friendship grows during her visits to his trailer home, but although it is completely innocent it is obvious that it would be unacceptable to the residents if they found out.
