Assisting them occasionally was a funny, ukulele-strumming Hawaiian taxi driver named Kazuo Kim, whose wardrobe, consisting of a straw hat and crazy Hawaiian shirts, and numerous relatives living all over the Hawaiian Islands, willing to help his employers if they needed it, provided invaluable comic relief. They were also aided by a dim-bulbed, scatter-brained, flippant nightclub singer and photographer named Chryseis "Cricket" Blake. Later joining the team, was private eye Greg MacKenzie, an old friend of Tom's from the mainland. Troy Donahue came along in the last season, as hotel Social Director Philip Barton. Lieutenant Danny Quon was their contact on the police force who was always on call to provide any vital information that could help the Eyes crack a case.

Todd was brought in during the series development phase to help brainstorm the show format and develop a technical plan and budget for producing the show. The show format featured one live remote interview. The program was designed so that both hosts could be in the studio or remote when necessary. The format required the versatility to handle live segments based on breaking news, or to do the show entirely as a live production. The 30-minute daily series was shot using two hard cameras and one jib and anchored from a studio in Washington, D.C. The program was shot live-to-tape then played live-to-air from DC with graphics and effects added on the live play-out. In 1957, when second-graders Bryce Loski and Julianna "Juli" Baker first meet, Juli knows it's love, but Bryce isn't so sure and tries to avoid Juli. By the sixth grade in 1961, Bryce tries to get rid of Juli by dating Sherry Stalls, whom Juli despises. However, Bryce's best friend Garrett takes an interest in Sherry and eventually tells her the truth about Bryce asking her out; she doesn't take it well. From Juli's perspective, Bryce returned her feelings, but was shy. After finding out Bryce and Sherry broke up, she thought she could have Bryce back. But then they reconsider their decisions as time goes on. In 1962, Bryce's grandfather Chet Duncan moves in with the family. Chet has different views about Juli. There's a large old sycamore tree that Juli loves, which no one else understands. One day, it's cut down by a group of landscapers so a house can be built there, despite Juli's opposition. She becomes very depressed afterwards, as the tree let her see the world in a more enlightened way. Her father gives her a painting of the tree.

Three friends, whose lives have been drifting apart, reunite for the funeral of a fourth childhood friend. When looking through their childhood belongings, they discover a trunk which contained details on a quest their friend was attempting. It revealed that he was hot on the trail of the $200,000 that went missing with airplane hijacker D.B. Cooper in 1971. They decide to continue his journey, but do not understand the dangers they will soon encounter.
