Melody Ranch

1 hr 24 mins

With a longer-than-usual running time on original release and booked and sold to the exhibitors as a "Gene Autry Special", which Republic would do once a year from 1939-1943 to get higher rates than on the regular series entries from the theatre owners. Hey, Jimmy Durante and Ann Miler cost more than Smiley Burnette and June Storey. This "special" (which alternates between tongue-in-cheek and for-real, and hard to distinguish which is which since there was very little for-real in most of the fantasy-land settings Autry's Republic films were laid in) finds Gene returning to his hometown of Torpedo as guest of honor at the Frontier Days Celebration, Once there, he encounters his childhood enemies, the Wildhack brothers (Barton MacLane, Joe Sawyer and Horace MacMahon in pecking order), now the local gangsters (and playing it with relish). The Wildhacks own a saloon next door to the school, and when their shooting and brawling endangers the safety of the children, Gene protests and threatens to expose them during his next radio broadcast. The Wildhacks stop the broadcast and beat Gene up. Gene, humiliated because Hollywood life has softened him to the extent that he can't hold his own against three assailants, decides to remain in Torpedo and get into shape again. He is encouraged by his friend Cornelius J. "Corney" Courtney, and also by Pop Laramie, owner and operator of the local version of the "Toonerville Trolley." Since Gene refuses to return to Hollywood, his radio show now originates from Torpedo. Julie Sheldon, a débutante with theatrical aspirations, sees Gene in his natural setting, and begins to take an interest in the cowboy she formerly scorned. Gene avenges himself against the Wildhacks by rounding them up, whipping them single-handed and forcing them to sing on his broadcast. Enraged, the brothers are determined to "get" Gene. He, in turn, runs for sheriff so he will be in position to clean up the Wildhack political machine and use can be made of the "Vote For Autry" song. During the battles that ensue, one of Gene's friends is killed. Gene finally obtains evidence which labels the Wildhacks as killers.

The Roaring Twenties

1 hr 46 mins

New Yorkers Eddie Bartlett, George Hally, and slightly younger Lloyd Hart met and became friends, despite they being different personalities, when they fought together in the trenches in France during the Great War. Not knowing what would happen after the war, each believed he would return to the civilian life he left behind, Eddie as a mechanic in hopes of someday owning his own garage, George working in his father's bar again with the hope of someday owning his own, and Lloyd to become a lawyer in he having been a law student. Further, Eddie was hoping to hook up with Jean Sherman, the young woman from Mineola who had been writing to him while he was in France. Things didn't turn out quite the way each had expected, especially for Eddie and George, both in American society not knowing what to do with returning soldiers, and with the onset of Prohibition. And Jean ends up being not quite how she portrayed herself in being much younger than Eddie believed. Eddie is the one who is able to pivot the greatest in he, by chance, falling successfully into the bootlegging business, with the help of people like his pre-war roommate Danny Green, a cabbie, and speakeasy manager Panama Smith, who saw in Eddie a kindred spirit. Despite Eddie not seeing Danny as being fit for a criminal life, Eddie is able to parlay his cabbie job into a taxi business as a front for the bootlegging. He also ends up working with Lloyd, who manages much of Eddie's business and legal dealings, especially with regard to the taxi business, and with George, who he runs into in working the distribution for Eddie's competitor, Nick Brown, and who he convinces to go into business with him instead. The lives of the survivors in this competitive, cutthroat and potentially deadly business is shown over the 1920s, where Eddie, George, and Lloyd may see his own life different than the other two, and as Jean grows into a beautiful young woman, what Eddie had originally seen in the letters and photos she sent to him during the war.

Food, Inc.

1 hr 34 mins

The current method of raw food production is largely a response to the growth of the fast food industry since the 1950s. The production of food overall has more drastically changed since that time than the several thousand years prior. Controlled primarily by a handful of multinational corporations, the global food production business - with an emphasis on the business - has as its unwritten goals production of large quantities of food at low direct inputs (most often subsidized) resulting in enormous profits, which in turn results in greater control of the global supply of food sources within these few companies. Health and safety (of the food itself, of the animals produced themselves, of the workers on the assembly lines, and of the consumers actually eating the food) are often overlooked by the companies, and are often overlooked by government in an effort to provide cheap food regardless of these negative consequences. Many of the changes are based on advancements in science and technology, but often have negative side effects. The products made have been shown in several studies to enlarge male sexual organs and increase male breast size. The answer that the companies have come up with is to throw more science at the problems to bandage the issues but not the root causes. The global food supply may be in crisis with lack of biodiversity, but can be changed on the demand side of the equation.

Dark Days

1 hr 22 mins

Near Penn Station, next to the Amtrak tracks, squatters have been living for years. Marc Singer goes underground to live with them, and films this "family." A dozen or so men and one woman talk about their lives: horrors of childhood, jail time, losing children, being coke-heads. They scavenge, they've built themselves sturdy one-room shacks; they have pets, cook, chat, argue, give each other haircuts. A bucket is their toilet. Leaky overhead pipes are a source of water for showers. They live in virtual darkness. During the filming, Amtrak gives a 30-day eviction notice.
