The Fury of a Patient Man
In a squalid working-class cafe located in a barrio somewhere in Madrid, hard-working single mother Ana struggles to make ends meet as a bartender, living a simple and routine life with her only son. Patiently, for the past eight long years, Ana has been waiting for her criminal boyfriend Curro's release, while in the meantime, the unassuming and gentle Jose has already become a regular customer spending a lot of time in her cafe, quite obviously in fond of her. And then, one day, Curro is finally released, still violent and resentful after his long-lasting incarceration, threatening not only Ana's peace but also her tentative and fragile romance with Jose. Eventually, having no other choice but to escape, Ana will accept Jose's offer to live with her son in his secluded cottage, completely unaware though of quiet Jose's inscrutable and utterly impelling motives.

Cas & Dylan
In Winnipeg, Dr. Cas Pepper has just found out he has a terminal brain tumor. Dylan Morgan is an aspiring writer. The two first set eyes on each other in the hospital ward, where Dylan was trying to get inspired for her writings. Despite being a mismatched pair, the two end up on a journey together, largely out of a joint incident with Dylan's boyfriend Bobby, to head "west". This journey was originally Cas' alone as part of what he felt he needed to do in light of his diagnosis, his complete mission about which Dylan is unaware. Although he would like to do this trip on his own beyond the issue with Bobby, he finds it is more difficult to get rid of Dylan than he would like. It seems as if Dylan is both running away from Bobby, and running toward what she hopes is that lucrative writing career, that next step being a meeting with a representative at a publishing house in Vancouver. This journey ends up being one of discovery for both, both in terms of learning about the other's full current mission - which each believes he/she gets a better handle on from information gleaned from the other's cell phone - and what the other truly means to him/herself in their short time together.

Newly Single
American filmmaker Adam Christian Clark directs and stars in this jet-black comedy centered around the LA dating scene, as a self-obsessed filmmaker who finds himself on the market once again. The film is darkly funny and sometimes brutal. After ridiculing his girlfriend, director Astor Williams Stevenson finds himself single and trying to discover what exactly he wants. At the same time, he attempts to get a film off the ground and soon learns that his creative vision will not align with that of his crew. As Astor goes on a number of dates, his abrasiveness and cynical attitude towards life seems to become ever more crystallized. The film's centerpiece is a fearless performance from Clark as he embodies a man whose self-loathing is hidden by arrogance. Yet, for all his bluff and bluster Clark manages to add a sheen of vulnerability to make Astor a compelling and sympathetic character. While the film is reminiscent of great American cinema of the 1970s (with some slight echoes of the works of Woody Allen) with a somewhat staccato structure made up of disparate moments, this is still a thoroughly modern affair replete with some graphic sexuality and an often-harsh takedown on modern views of dating. Despite its moments of cynicism, this also manages to be a witty, funny must for all those who appreciate strong voices in American cinema.

The Mustang
In the inconclusive assessment in his initial placement as reintegration into the general population at the Nevada correctional facility where he's been housed, long term inmate Roman Coleman, a brooding loner, is assigned to outdoor maintenance, which largely entails shoveling the manure from around the animal enclosures. Noticing his seemingly natural draw to the horses, Myles asks that Coleman be reassigned to his rehabilitation program: the training of captured wild mustangs ultimately to be sold at auction. The program matches each inmate solely to one animal to train, Coleman who names his mustang, one of the more spirited ones, Marquis. The ebbs and flows in Coleman's time in the program with Marquis may mirror Coleman's own ebbs and flows in his reintegration in light of the issues he faces in dealing with various groups and individuals: the prison administration; Myles and the others in the training program; the general prison population; and the one and only visitor he currently receives, his pregnant young adult daughter Martha who has only come to clear up some administrative family issues, and thus who would have not wanted to see her father otherwise.
