Siobhán (Hermione Corfield), a young marine biology student, is a brilliant researcher who is far more interested in her lab than in other people. As part of her studies, she goes aboard a trawler off the Irish coast for field research, but the crew isn't exactly thrilled to have the aloof scientist on board. Captain Freya (Connie Nielsen) and her husband Gerard (Dougray Scott) are not only facing major financial problems but have also still not recovered from the loss of their young daughter. The remaining four crew members superstitiously view Siobhán's red hair as a bad omen. What the crew doesn't know, however, is the cutter's secret change of course: Gerard is steering it illegally into protected waters in order to finally land the big catch that will save them. When the trawler suddenly seems to have run aground on something, a strange green slime is found on parts of the hull, slowly seeping through the side of the ship. As Siobhán soon discovers, it is secreted by the tentacles of a giant, jellyfish-like, unidentifiable creature from the deep sea, into whose habitat the cutter has intruded. It doesn't take long before the first crew member, with an open wound, becomes infected by the green secretion, goes blind, and dies a agonizing death. While Siobhán desperately tries to identify the mysterious creature and understand how its secretions work, the mass deaths at sea continue unabated.
