Lauren Cohan may be leaving The Walking Dead for good. Cohan, who has played fan-favorite character Maggie since Season 2, does not have a contract in place to return for Season 9 and has signed on for the lead role in an ABC pilot called Whiskey Cavalier.
Her future is still up in the air — she hasn't officially left The Walking Dead, and she may negotiate a new deal with AMC if Whiskey Cavalier doesn't get picked up or could even drop out of Whiskey Cavalier if she re-ups with The Walking Dead — but whatever happens, her co-star Seth Gilliam is happy for her.
"It's good for Lauren to know that she's attracting interest from other people," the Father Gabriel actor tells TV Guide.
Gilliam isn't worried about the potentially Maggie-less future of the show. "I think she's a fantastic actress," he says. "I think it would be a loss for the show, but the show seems to find a way to go on [after] losing important characters and fantastic actors all throughout the years." He's confident the show would adjust to losing Cohan.
He hasn't talked to her about what her plans are, though. So maybe they'll both be back at work in a couple of months to start Season 9-- that is, if Father Gabriel makes it to Season 9, which seems unlikely considering how sick he is. Gilliam says he'd like to stay, since it's a good job, but if it's Gabe's time to go, it's Gabe's time to go.
The Walking Dead returns Sunday, Feb. 25 at 9/8c on AMC.
