Lauren Cohan's New Gig Spells Bad News for Maggie on The Walking Dead

Is her beloved character slated to die?

Keisha Hatchett

Are we about to lose Maggie on The Walking Dead? It's beginning to look that way.

Lauren Cohan, who plays the fan favorite on the AMC series, just snagged the lead role in the pilot for ABC's new action dramedy Whiskey Cavalier opposite Scandalstar Scott Foley, according to Deadline. Foley will become available when the Shondaland drama wraps up its seventh and final season in April.

As for Cohan, she reportedly rejected a new long-term contract that included a modest pay increase which didn't meet her requests for pay parity alongside co-stars Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus. Her current contract ends after Season 8 and she has yet to sign a new one. While there's been no official confirmation about whether or not she's leaving the series, either things aren't looking good for Maggie to appear in Season 9 or this one heck of a negotiating tactic.

The Walking Dead: What You Need to Remember from Season 8A

Maggie first emerged on The Walking Dead in Season 2 and quickly became one of the show's most popular characters. Her potential exit would leave many questions unanswered about her current storyline which finds her becoming a potential leader of the group and also pregnant with her and Glenn's (Steven Yeun) child. Maggie is still alive in the comics.

Other stars have left The Walking Dead for new projects, including Sonequa Martin-Green who jumped ship for Star Trek: Discovery and Jon Bernthal who went on to headline Marvel's The Punisher on Netflix. But their characters' deaths were pretty much a given.

The Walking Dead Season 8 returns Sunday, Feb. 25 at 9/8c on AMC.
