It looks like everybody's favorite limited series on a cable network starring Jessica Biel is officially taking the "limited" out of its description. USA Network has officially renewed The Sinner for Season 2, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
While the first season focused on figuring out why suburban mom Cora (Biel) murdered a man in broad daylight, the new season will follow Detective Ambrose (Bill Pullman) to his hometown in rural New York where he will set out to solve another unsettling crime: a couple murdered by their 11-year-old son with no apparent motive.
As Ambrose tries to uncover why this seemingly normal kid killed his parents, he'll be up against those desperately trying to keep the dark secrets of their small town under wraps.
The series shifting its focus from the OG sinner Cora to Ambrose is a shocking, and questionable, choice. Although Pullman was a standout in The Sinner's first season, the main draw of the USA mystery was always to find out why Jessica Biel murdered that dude, not to learn more about the detective investigating her case.
As of now, there's been no confirmation on whether or not Biel will reprise her role, but it'd be relatively hard to shoehorn her character into this new story given the location change, so we're not holding our breath.
That means unlike fellow former-limited-series-based-on-a-murder-mystery-novel, Big Little Lies, which will bring back all your favorites for its second season, The Sinner will do the complete opposite by focusing on a bevy of new, unfamiliar characters to tell a completely unrelated story. On the plus side, you're at least getting more Bill Pullman and we'd never complain about that.
Mark your calendars if you want. Season 2 of The Sinner is expected to arrive sometime next summer.
