The Simpson's Duff Beer will be purely fictional no longer! The brew will be hitting shelves beginning in Chile, and later more of South America and Europe by early next year, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Beer sellers have been trying to release their own versions of Duff Beer for years, but had to pull them when they heard from 21st Century Fox (The Simpsons' owner). The company is now working with a brewmaster to perfect the flavor."It's a premium lager," Jeffrey Godsick, president of the company's consumer products division told the paper. "It's got a very good balance of flavor and refreshment to it. It's fairly deep golden in color. It's got a hint of fruit to it. It's got a caramel aromatic to it." But even if you're lucky enough to get your hands on a cold one, don't expect it to be a full Simpsons experience. The aim is for the packaging and marketing to stand on its own and not reference the show at all. Besides, having Homer hawk beer could be seen as advertising to children.
Unfortunately, in our own domestic market (outside of the Simpsons sections of Universal's theme parks), there is no Duff available. Though, Fox isn't ruling it out. "I think there's potential to have Duff everywhere in the world," said Godsick.
Fox targeted Chile first because it had been fighting unauthorized versions of the beer in the country's market with some success, though demand for the illegitimate versions has amped up across the region from Colombia to Mexico. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em?
Now excuse us while we book our trip to Chile next year.
