Shadowhunters: Domestic Malec Is Literally Everything

Overdosing on cuteness over here

Shadowhunters may have given us a pretty dark episode, what with Jace turning out to be the person under the Owl's mysterious mask all along -- more on that later -- but at least it was tempered with some adorable domestic Malec moments.

While Izzy (Emeraude Toubia), Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) tried to get to the bottom of all the demon possessions in the city, Alec (Matthew Daddario) was left to fend with an entirely different kind of demon: his mother.

Maryse Lightwood (Nicola Correia-Damude) paid her family a visit, and she somehow ended up at a dinner table with just Alec and Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) all night. The weirdest part? She was surprisingly civil. More than civil, she was downright chipper! She even gave Magnus a HUG.

While that was all because she was coping with the fact that she would soon be stripped of her runes (Circle members never prosper), it was still a nice change to see. One of the biggest stumbling blocks of the Malec romance has always been Alec's family's prejudices against Downworlders. To see Maryse accept Magnus and even thank him for loving her son in the way every mother hopes for children was a touching and very necessary milestone in Alec and Magnus' relationship.

Shadowhunters: Inside the Most Awkward Double Date Ever

Unfortunately, happiness isn't a hallmark of this show, so while Alec is on cloud nine, Jace is in deep trouble.

It seems he's developed a bit of a split personality, and when he's not trying to hunt himself down (don't get us started), he's been serving Lillith (Anna Hopkins) as she attempts to resurrect Jonathan (Will Tudor).

That path is definitely leading nowhere good.

This Week's Exclusive Secrets from Set: Finding out the Jace is, in fact, the Owl is a pretty big trip. What's even trippier is that Dominic Sherwood has actually been under the mask this whole time instead of leaving it up to a stunt guy. Talk about going the extra mile!

"That costume is not an easy thing to fight in," Sherwood reveals. "The mask is quite heavy. There are solid black lenses that are out of focus, so I can't really see 100 percent, but at the end of the day it looks sweet, so it doesn't really matter that much."

At least Clace fans can be kind of happy to know that McNamara confirms the big choking scene is all for show and Sherwood's hand was "barely" on her throat.

Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Freeform.
