Once again, the Duttons are keeping it interesting.

That's how Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) puts it in the trailer for Season 2 of the CBS hit Marshals, which follows Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in the aftermath of the deaths of both his father John and his wife Monica. He's now a U.S. marshal, but no one ever gets to rest easy on Dutton land.

Season 1 ended with heavy gunfire and some major revelations. Cal is battling a rare cancer and facing off with two gunmen alongside Belle (Arielle Kebbel), and Kayce was just about to sell his beloved land to a bonafide supervillain and give his heart to the supervillain's daughter, all while Tate is on the supervillain's private plane thinking he's going fishing in Texas. It's clear Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) isn't going to back off from trying to buy East Camp and disrupt Broken Rock Reservation anytime soon, and to quote Cal once again, "Land is plenty of motive for murder."

Marshals Season 2 release date

Marshals Season 2 kicks off CBS's premiere week on Sunday, Oct. 4. However, the timing of the Season 2 premiere will depend on what coast you live on; on the East Coast, it will premiere after 60 Minutes at 8:30 p.m. ET, and on the West Coast, it will premiere at 8 p.m. PT. Its regular time slot for subsequent episodes will be 8/7c. Episodes will be available on Paramount+ the next day. It will be followed on CBS's fall TV schedule by the fourth season of Tracker.

A brand new trailer was released on Sept. 2, which you can watch below. It features some highly concerning scenes, like Kayce being attacked in his home again as Weaver puts the pressure on him to sell. A guy in a suit tells Kayce he should reconsider the deal, "given your son's future is at stake."

It appears Kayce is trying to get Tate (Brecken Merrill) out from under the Dutton family curse while juggling the threats from Weaver and the dangerous job he's signed on for. At least it appears that Cal and Belle survived their fight with Weaver's gunmen, and that Cruz (Ash Santos) chose not to take that job in DC. (And are we catching flirty vibes between her and Kayce, or is that wishful thinking?)

Marshals Season 2 production

Season 2 went into production in May 2026 in Salt Lake City, Utah, which CBS announced by sharing photos of Santos, Grimes, and Tatanka Means. Marshall-Green and Kebbel confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that their characters did survive their ambush and were returning for Season 2.

The series continues to be executive produced by creator and showrunner Spencer Hudnut, with Taylor Sheridan, Grimes, John Linson, David Glasser, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Friedman, and Greg Yaitanes also executive producing.

The whole Season 1 cast appears to be returning, alongside at least one new face and one familiar face. Marque Richardson is joining the series as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns, per Deadline. 

Jefferson White, who played the green ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstrom on Yellowstone, will reprise that role in Season 2 of Marshals. Jimmy was one of the main characters on Yellowstone until he was shipped off to the Four Sixes ranch in Texas for cowboy boot camp during Season 4. But Jimmy never came back to Montana on that series, and the last time we saw him, he had become a proper cowboy, and he'd settled down with and married a local woman named Emily. Since Tate went missing in Texas at the end of Season 1 of Marshals, it could be that Jimmy will be involved in helping Kayce rescue him.

Marshals Season 2 storyline

Per CBS, here's the logline for the series: "With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence."

Season 1 of Marshals picked up a couple of years after the series finale of Yellowstone. Kayce ended that series on a happy note after selling the majority of the Yellowstone ranch to Thomas Rainwater for $1.25 an acre. He kept one part, East Camp, for him, his wife Monica, and their son Tate. Before Marshals began, Monica died of cancer, leaving Kayce and Tate in a dark place.

Kayce's former Marine buddy Cal convinced him to join the U.S. Marshals, and his new job has definitely felt the effects of his personal life as the team has had to defend his home from attack and has worked awfully close to the body drop zone known on Yellowstone as "the train station."

Season 2 will pick up after the violent events of the finale, which left some lives hanging in the balance. After Kayce decided not to sell East Camp to Tom Weaver, it was discovered that Weaver was behind the attack on Kayce's home and the disruptive mining being done at Broken Rock. As the episode ended, however, Weaver was on his way to Texas with Tate in tow, and Kayce was riding a horse with Weaver's daughter Dolly, with no idea what was going on.

Cal revealed to Belle that he's dealing with a cancer diagnosis, but that had to be set aside for the moment as they went to investigate the ranch hand who appeared to trigger the attack on East Camp. They found him dead, then saw that he was apparently killed by Weaver's ranch foreman who was accompanied by a couple of guys with big guns. When we last saw them, Cal and Belle were right in their line of fire. Kebbel told THR that Season 2 will return to that moment.

Cal will also have to reveal his cancer diagnosis sooner rather than later, and that's bound to have some effect on his estranged daughter Maddie and her relationship with Cal's teammate, Miles.

Cruz was supposed to be headed to DC to get herself far away from Montana, but she was ready and willing to miss her flight to help the team, so perhaps she'll stick around after all to help deal with the mess Weaver is making.
