The 2019 Emmys Will Not Have A Host

Is the era of awards show hosts ending? Quite possibly, if the 2019 Oscars and upcoming 2019 Emmys Fox are any indication. Fox President Charlie Collier announced at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards will not have a host.

"It's our job to assess how to elevate the program in the year we're lucky enough to broadcast it, and what's interesting about this year, to me, is how many amazing shows we're saying goodbye to. You've got obviously Game of Thrones and our ownEmpire. You've got Veep and The Big Bang Theory," Collier said. "You really do have to look at all the tradeoffs. If you have a host and an opening number, that's 15-20 minutes you can't use to salute the shows... We will go hostless this year, and I think it will give us more time to honor those shows."

Collier did promise that there would be an opening number and plenty of entertainment during the broadcast, even without having a single host as the face of the event.

This follows the trend started by the Oscars earlier this year, which also went hostless and saw an increase and ratings and decrease in runtime as a result. Of course, it's unclear whether the lack of host was directly responsible for those things, but the Oscars did prove that the show can go on without an MC running the program.
