Ellen Pompeo Says She Hasn't Spoken to Patrick Dempsey Since He Left Grey's Anatomy

But not because there's any drama

Lindsay MacDonald

It's always difficult watching beloved actors leave long-running TV series, but nothing was harder than watching Patrick Dempsey's exit from Grey's Anatomy. It's hard to believe it's been almost four years since Dempsey left the ABC medical drama, but it's even harder to believe that Ellen Pompeo apparently hasn't spoken to him since then.

While appearing on Jada Pinkett Smith's Facebook Watch talk show,Red Table Talk, about interracial marriage and the challenges of raising bi-racial children, Pompeo mentioned that she hasn't had much contact with Dempsey since he departed the show.

"We haven't spoken since he's left the show," said Pompeo. "I have no hard feelings toward him. He's a wonderful actor, and we made the best TV you can make together. That's a talented man right there. He did 11 amazing years. Typically, when people leave the show, they need to sort of re-find themselves, who they are without the show, because the show takes up so much of your life. You need that time to like figure out who you are without the show. So, we have not spoken, but I will always have a place in my heart for Patrick."

Though it's disappointing to hear that two people we loved so much together on-screen maybe aren't so close in real life, it's nice to hear that Pompeo has so much respect for Dempsey and the work they did on Grey's Anatomy. Not to mention, we give her major points for being so classy about her answer. There's not a lot of delicate ways to say, "Um, no. We're not friends."

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
