El Rey's soccer-spy drama Matador is leaving the pitch for good. The upstart network from director Roberto Rodriguez has decided not to move forward with the previously ordered second season of the program, Deadlinereports.
The series boasted one of the year's most bizarre premises, as it followed a DEA agent who went undercover as a professional soccer player. Gabriel Luna starred alongside Alfred Molina, Nicky Whelan and Neil Hopkins.Matador was El Rey's second original program after From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series.
Fans may want to kick the shins of El Rey executives over the cancellation, as the network went back on its word after renewing the show for a second season before the series ever premiered. But poor international ratings and a costly budget forced El Rey to reverse its decision.
