Daybreak, Netflix's new post-apocalyptic coming-of-age comedy, is the kind of pop culture-loving show that's chockablock with hat tips, homages, and Easter eggs to genre-defining TV and film. After all, when one of the only adults on your show is played by Matthew Broderick, you can't pass up a chance to get some classic Ferris Bueller shots in.

But Daybreak's best connection to fandom comes in the form of not one but two distinct ties to Supernatural. First and foremost, Colin Ford, who plays young Sam on Supernatural, is the lead of Daybreak. Ford plays Josh Wheeler, a survival junkie who is living his best life in a world without adults. But an even bigger thrill for Supernaturalfans comes when Sophie Simnett appears on screen as Sam Dean, the kindest girl in high school, who is also one of Josh's only friends pre-apocalypse. The romantic tension between Sam and Josh is brilliant on its own, but that added name drop of the main characters of Supernatural -- Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) -- kicks it up an extra level for fans.

Imagine our surprise when, in conversation with TV Guide, Ford and Simnett revealed that Sam Dean's name is an accidental Easter egg! Check out the exclusive video for the behind-the-scenes story on how Sam Dean got her name, and see what else Ford and Simnett had to say about Daybreak.

Daybreak premieres Thursday, Oct. 24 on Netflix.
