The Season 5 premiere of Chicago Medmarks a new normal, as the show is bidding farewell to one of its original cast members. Colin Donnell, who has starred as Dr. Connor Rhodes since the pilot, will return for one final episode to deliver a proper goodbye to his character after the Season 4 finale left things too open-ended.
As you'll recall, Connor accused Ava (Norma Kuhling) of murdering his father Cornelius (D.W. Moffett), which resulted in a huge argument that ended with Ava storming off and Connor standing around in a huff. Although both characters were expected to exit the series in the finale, their explosive fight offered no definitive farewell for either, which left many fans confused about whether or not they were actually leaving.
Showrunners Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov told TV Guide they decided to bring Connor back for a final appearance in the hopes of providing fans with some much-needed closure. However, it's still unclear if Ava will also be back. "[Connor] is very important to the show and we felt that his character was owed a proper goodbye and a resolution to his story," Schneider said of Donnell's impending departure.
Slated to air Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on NBC, the Season 5 premiere will see an investigation launched into Cornelius's suspicious death. All signs point to Ava, who operated on the elder Rhodes and who has also vehemently denied any wrongdoing, as the culprit. While it marks Connor's final appearance on the series, at least for now, co-showrunner Frolov hinted that this may not be the last time we see him in the Windy City.
"Certainly, we've left the door open [for him to return]," Frolov said.
But for those expecting to see Rhodes back anytime soon -- if ever -- maybe don't get your hopes up. The episode, titled "Never Going Back to Normal," suggests otherwise. Given all the terrible things he's experienced over the years, from a rocky relationship with Robin (Mekia Cox) and Ava cheating on him with his dad to his father's death, we don't blame him for wanting to stay away.
The Season 5 premiere will also address several other cliffhangers: Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) and Will's (Nick Gehlfuss) devastating car wreck, April (Yaya DaCosta) thinking she might be pregnant with Ethan's (Brian Tee) baby, and Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) discovering she may have cancer after donating a kidney to a patient.
Catch Connor Rhodes in action one last time when Chicago Med returns for Season 5 on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on NBC.
