If you were looking for more than one American Horror Story treat this Halloween, get ready for a tricky surprise: creator Ryan Murphy has just revealed that Sarah Paulson's American Horror Story: Asylum survivor Lana Winters will be returning this season on American Horror Story: Roanoke.
But before you can whip your head around in confusion faster than that Chan ghost from Roanoke, yes, Paulson is already on Roanoke as Audrey Tindall, the British actress who portrayed Shelby Miller in the show within a show, My Roanoke Nightmare. So, what is Murphy saying? Are we about to be treated to not one, but two different Sarah Paulsons???
Sarah Paulson's ASYLUM ultimate survivor LANA WINTERS returns this season on "AHS: ROANOKE." Happy Halloween!— Ryan Murphy (@MrRPMurphy) October 31, 2016
To be fair, this wouldn't even be the first time Paulson has portrayed dual characters on the show: she previously played conjoined twins on American Horror Story: Freak Show. In addition, we know that by the end of the second show within a show, Return To Roanoke: Three Days in Hell, only one of the cast members will survive.
We've speculated at TVGuide.com that this second show within a show will wrap up by Episode 9, leaving Episode 10 (the season finale) to incorporate one last twist. So it's possible Paulson (meaning Audrey Tindall) will die by the end of Episode 9, and then Episode 10 will reintroduce Lana Winters.
Or it could mean that Audrey is Lana, who was a journalist in Asylum dying (not literally) to get the ultimate scoop. Granted, Audrey is Sarah Paulson's age now (in 2016), while we last saw Lana at age 75 on 2013, so that doesn't quite work.
But who knows? This show is crazy! We already discovered earlier today that Murphy is planning a season long Coven/Murder House crossover, so basically anything goes. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if, by the end of this, Sarah Paulson also shows up... as Sarah Paulson.
American Horror Story: Roanoke airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on FX.
