Just when you thought 9-1-1 couldn't get any wilder, co-creators and executive producers Tim Minear and Ryan Murphy prove they still have plenty of tricks — and emergencies! — up their sleeves. For the opening emergency of the show's milestone 10th season, the first responders of television's most outlandish procedural will tackle a massive downtown sinkhole that unleashes, of all things, an active volcano. (Go figure!)

With the new season right around the corner, we gathered all the information you need to be ready for the endless chaos of Los Angeles and the first responders who keep the city safe from bee-nados, highway shark attacks, and tsunamis. Read on for 9-1-1 Season 10's release date, cast, trailers, and more.

Everything you need for fall TV:

9-1-1 Season 10 release date

The new season of 9-1-1 will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 8/7c on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu. Like the previous three seasons, the first-responder drama will headline ABC's coveted Thursday night lineup, which was once famously occupied entirely by Shonda Rhimes' production company. The schedule remains the same as last season: 9-1-1 will air at 8/7c, spin-off 9-1-1: Nashville will return for its sophomore season at 9/8c, and Rhimes' last remaining ABC series, the long-running stalwart Grey's Anatomy, will serve as the nightcap at 10/9c. You can see ABC's full fall schedule right here.

Where is the 9-1-1 trailer?

True to form, ABC has released both an extended trailer and a couple of small social-media teasers to give audiences a sense of what to expect from the opening emergency.

In the 90-second trailer, newly minted detective Athena (Angela Bassett) and the firefighters of the 118 are tasked with trying to save as many civilians as possible, even though, as call center boss Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) points out, "L.A. has no protocol for a volcano." The trailer is jam-packed with vehicles trapped in CGI lava, firefighters jumping and falling on top of cars and climbing precariously high ladders, and even a person falling back-first into the molten rock.

9-1-1 leans into the absurdity of a volcano erupting in the middle of the city with quippy one-liners — Hen (Aisha Hinds) encourages her team to "Get in there and try not to get Pompeii'd," and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) tells Eddie (Ryan Guzman) that "the floor is lava." Of course, a major disaster on this show always brings high-stakes personal drama. After Athena crawls through a hole in the ground, her daughter May (Corinne Massiah), who is now in nursing school, tries in vain to reach her by phone. That leaves the 118 — now featuring Athena's son Harry (Elijah M. Cooper) in their ranks — desperately scrambling to track her down.

Come on, is Bobby Nash really dead?

Yes, we regret to report that Bobby Nash — who sacrificed himself to save the rest of his team toward the end of Season 8 — is still dead on 9-1-1.

Peter Krause, who portrayed the beloved fire captain from the show's pilot episode until the end of Season 8, has officially moved on to new horizons. In the new NBC action-thriller family drama Line of Fire, which airs Mondays at 10/9c and streams the next day on Peacock, Krause stars as the patriarch of a multigenerational law enforcement dynasty — spanning the Secret Service, FBI, U.S. Marshals, and Department of Justice — who get caught in a deadly conspiracy.

In the wake of his shocking exit from 9-1-1, Krause only sat down for one very short interview with Good Morning America and issued a long statement confirming his departure through the major trade publications. But for the first time since leaving the longest-running show of his career to date, Krause opened up to The Hollywood Reporter last month about why he understood the creative decision to kill Bobby off the show.

"I think it's interesting for the audience to see Chimney assume the captainship and other people grow," Krause told THR. "I think that's something that's probably good for the show — to see those characters grow and also deal with loss. It was something more serious. We hadn't lost one of our own [in eight seasons]. I do think that the theme of that show — which I always called a comic book about first responders come to life — is that they're going to go through everything and keep on living. Something we hadn't done was what ended up happening."

And in case you were wondering, Krause is well aware of the fan theories claiming Bobby is still alive — largely because viewers never actually saw his body removed from the contaminated lab where he died. "It would be within the language of the show for Bobby Nash to come to [his senses] with amnesia and for Athena to have to get in there and make him remember who he is again," Krause said in that THR interview, adding fuel to those theories.

"Look, on a show where anything could happen, I think that that's part of the fun of that show, and why the audiences were upset is because it's like, 'Come on! Anything can happen on this show. This isn't bound by the same rules as other television shows. This is unbridled,'" Krause continued. "But I hope that they remember Bobby Nash fondly. I certainly loved him, and obviously audiences did too."

Will there be a 9-1-1 crossover with the Nashville or Lone Star spin-offs?

In a recent interview with TVLine, 9-1-1: Nashville showrunner Rashad Raisani — who previously oversaw 9-1-1: Lone Star, which aired for five seasons on Fox — confirmed that there will be multiple 9-1-1 crossovers this season. The first crossover will happen in the second episode of Nashville's second season.

During their opening crisis, which will reportedly feature a swarm of some kind, the first responders on 9-1-1: Nashville will have a FaceTime call with Buck (Oliver Stark). In case you forgot, Buck and Eddie met several Nashville characters last season when they crossed over to the spin-off for the annual firefighter games.

"Our characters are like, 'We can't even imagine that we're seeing is real,' and then somebody's like, 'You know, Buck told us about this problem they had,'" Raisani teased to TVLine. "So it's a fun thing where [the 118] help us solve a problem." (Something tells us that Buck will be talking about the "bee-nado" — the opening emergency from Season 8 — again.)

Raisani also confirmed to TVLine that he wants to do "another big OG crossover," which would presumably involve bringing together the characters of all three 9-1-1 shows.

The original 9-1-1 only crossed over with Lone Star a couple of times — once at the start of Season 2, when Hen, Buck, and Eddie helped fight a wildfire in Texas; and another time in Season 3, when Athena helped Carlos (Rafael L. Silva) and Grace (Sierra McClain) apprehend an obnoxious gamer-slash-murderer across state lines. The logistical challenges of trying to combine two very ambitious shows — both of which made multiple seasons during the COVID-19 pandemic — were to blame for the lack of crossovers.

For what it's worth, Raisani previously told TV Guide that he purposely chose not to kill off any of the Lone Star characters in the series finale — which centered around a potential nuclear explosion inside a Texas research lab — because he wanted to leave the door open for some of them to return in some capacity.

"Let's say we do something in New York — well, [Rob Lowe's] Owen's up there. Let's say we come back to Texas — well, [Jim Parrack's] Judd is the captain. Let's say there's a Texas Ranger thing happening in West Texas — well, Carlos could be there," Raisani told TV Guide. "I wanted as much nexus of possibility [as possible]. I love writing for all of these people and I love working with them. I thought they were all just magnificent collaborators. So I would love in any way shamelessly to have them come to L.A. for the 118 or to the new city, or the new city come to them, whatever. I don't care. I would love to see them again."

What else do you know about 9-1-1 Season 10?

ABC has already released the synopsis for the season premiere: "The 118 faces an earth-shattering emergency that shakes the city of Los Angeles to its core. Still finding her footing as a detective, Athena leans on instinct to crack a mysterious new case, while May finds her own confidence in a new job."

Here's what else we know about the new season:

  • After spending most of her career as a lone wolf in the field, Athena is now having to acclimate to having a new partner, Det. Newell (Rick Otto), who appeared briefly in the Season 9 premiere. "Weirdly, Athena is a combination of really experienced and a rookie because she's new to being officially a detective, but their dynamic is not unlike the dynamics we played with other detectives," Minear told TV Insider. "It's supportive and they're a good team."
  • Following the tragic deaths of his friends Kameron and Connor last season, Buck has stepped up as the foster parent of their 4-year-old son, Theo (Theodore Sykes). Theo is technically Buck's biological son, but Buck, who was his friends' sperm donor, previously wanted as little to do with the child as possible.
  • Buck will naturally lean on Eddie for single parenting advice. "There's so many learning experiences that are crucial to Buck's character that happen only for Buck, but there will be a lot of leaning on Eddie in trying to understand how this all works — being a single dad and time management, and even understanding the psyche of a child and their sleep schedules, and all the things that come with a child," Guzman told The Hollywood Reporter in May.
  • Despite being two of the most important people in Buck's life, Maddie and Eddie have somehow never had a substantive one-on-one scene together… until now! Hewitt confirmed the news in a fun video with Guzman, writing in the caption, "Guys this is not a drill! We got a scene! Yay! Can't wait for you guys to see it! Let's go! #Meddie"
  • Minear told TVLine that there will be a "little bit of a change" with one of Hen and Karen's (Tracie Thoms) children.
  • May will have her work cut out for her as a new nurse. On the personal side, she is still dating firefighter Ravi Panikkar (Anirudh Pisharody) — but she may also be fighting her attraction to fellow nurse Ian Bradley (Tre McBride).
  • A recent TikTok posted by Pisharody confirms that there will be a firefighting family dinner this season!

Are Buck and Eddie going to get together? What has Ryan Guzman said about "Buddie"?

Another year, another season of "Buddie" fans desperately hoping that Buck and Eddie will become a romantic item. At this point, your guess is as good as ours! Stark and Guzman are both well aware that a sizable subset of 9-1-1 fans have been clamoring for Buck and Eddie to cross the line from platonic to romantic for years, but Minear has danced around that question for years, refusing to commit one way or the other.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the end of Season 9, Guzman was asked whether he ever tried defining the dynamic between Buck and Eddie for himself.

"No, if anything, I've leaned more into just playing the truth of where Eddie is," Guzman responded. "That's his best friend, and he cares about him in a very, very deep way. I pull from my own experiences [and] my best friends. I'd do anything and everything I possibly could for them, especially their families. So I think the truth of Eddie at this point in time is leaning into that naivety."

Buck, of course, came out as bisexual in Season 7, but Guzman believes that Eddie — who has only ever canonically described himself as straight — has never even asked himself if Buck might be interested in him.

"If Buck were to present anything else [to him other than friendship], I haven't even wrapped my head around how Eddie would understand how to move forward with that — other than being caught off guard, I guess," Guzman elaborated. "It's almost like when something's so close, you can't see [the bigger picture]. It's right under your nose, but you can't see it. I think that's how it's meant to be played. So, yeah, I have no clue what the future holds."

Has 9-1-1 been renewed for Season 11 yet?

No, it has not. Historically, 9-1-1 receives its seasonal renewal announcements in the spring between March and May. If the show continues to maintain its strong ratings across broadcast and streaming, who knows how long it could last?
