Although Vitagraph director James Young generally limited himself to the films of his actress wife Clara Kimball Young, he occasionally helmed such "outside" projects as The Win(k)some Widow. The film was based on the popular theatrical farce of the same name, with Cissy Fitzgerald repeating her stage role. The story is set in motion when a pair of show business promoters, Cutey (Wally Van) and Hughie (Hughie Mack), find themselves saddled with a flop musical revue. In desperation, they seek out Fitzgerald, a famous stage star who retired years earlier when she got married. Without her husband's knowledge, Fitzgerald is coaxed out of retirement to save the floundering revue, and that's when the fun begins. Ironically, Cissy Fitzgerald, who in her Broadway heyday had been known as "the Girl with the Naughty Wink," was in real life persuaded to return to the footlights as star of The Win(k)some Widow.
