Friends Mike Stone, Phil Carter, and Skip Carter are army brats who grew up together on the same aviation base in Texas where Phil and Skip's General father was the Commanding Officer, and Mike's Sergeant father, also named Mike (they differentiated their entire joint lives as Little Mike and Big Mike) as a flight instructor. While it was a given that Phil would follow in his father's footsteps not only to become a pilot but an officer, it was only Big Mike's hopes that Little Mike too would become an army pilot, which he is working toward. Following their graduation from West Point, Phil and Little Mike are assigned to Randolph Field where General Carter is the Commanding Officer, and Big Mike one of the flight instructors. While Little Mike shows greater aptitude to flying than Phil, he shows it a little too much in being cocky in feeling like he can get away with anything. That cockiness however attracts the attention of divorced socialite Dare Marshall, the two who enter into a relationship despite everyone having assumed that Little Mike and Skip would end up together, probably including Skip herself. Because of Little Mike's attitude, General Carter assigns Big Mike not only to be Phil's instructor, but Little Mike's as well so that he can act both as instructor and father to tame that attitude. But things get complicated when there is a push and pull between father and son in their personal roles versus their military roles, where Little Mike, an officer, now outranks Big Mike, and as Big Mike tries to protect his son at all cost while trying to lead him to become what he considers a real man.
