London, in the early 1950s: Vera Drake lives in modest circumstances with her husband and their two adult children. She works as a cleaning lady, cares for her ailing mother, and is known in the neighborhood for her willingness to help others. But alongside her everyday life, she has a closely guarded secret: Vera helps young women secretly terminate unwanted pregnancies - not for profit, but out of a sincere desire to assist people in desperate situations. When complications arise during a procedure, Vera comes under the scrutiny of the authorities. In an instant, the carefully maintained order of her family life shatters. Vera's arrest shocks not only her but also her husband and their two children, who are confronted with a truth they neither expected nor can make sense of. What begins as a warm portrayal of everyday family life turns into a painful family drama about guilt, compassion, and societal double standards.
