Master baker Friedrich Schiller of Einbeck leads a harmonious family life with his wife Martha, with whom he is about to celebrate his silver wedding anniversary, and their nine children. He is always there for his growing daughters, whether they're dealing with heartbreak or tricky homework. He takes pride in the fact that he is set to become a board member of the bakers' guild. On his way home, he picks up the wife of the factory owner Küppers, Lollo Küppers, and drives her to her hunting lodge. As a thank-you, she invites him for a drink. Schiller, tipsy as he is, spends the night at the hunting lodge. The next morning, he can only vaguely recall what happened.
