In 1981, protests against a tour by the South African rugby team take place across New Zealand to take a stand against apartheid. The anti-tour movement receives strong support, particularly from the Maori community. Seventeen-year-old Josh (Julian Dennison), whose late father was Maori, begins to grapple with his own heritage for the first time as a result. The teenager is already having a hard time, as he is bullied by his classmates and seems to rub people the wrong way everywhere he goes. As a result, he is constantly living in the shadow of his older brother Jamie (James Rolleston), who was a promising rugby forward at his school until he injured his leg. As part of a small theater group, however, Josh discovers his talent and is persuaded by his teacher, Brother Madigan (Rhys Darby), to apply to Australia's most prestigious acting school. From then on, he prepares for the entrance exam every morning, but keeps his plans a secret from his mother (Minnie Driver). When Josh's brother Jamie is asked to coach the school's rugby team, he agrees on the condition that Josh be accepted onto the team as a forward. To avoid disappointing his family, Josh is now expected to devote himself entirely to the sport. But he is no longer willing to put his convictions and dreams on the back burner.
