Charity Byfleet (Mae Marsh) marries William Pennland (Ben Hendricks) before he enlists in the military and goes to war. He has an affair with Hagar (Laska Winter), who gives birth to a child before William dies. Charity invites Hagar and her baby to live with her in her home, but an angry mob gathers in an attempt to stone Hagar to death. She defends the other woman from the danger, and both women go on to find happiness with other men. Earl Schenck plays the pedlar Jonas, whose proposal Charity turns down to marry William. Ivor McFadden and Thomas Mills co-star in this story taken from a novel by Basil King.
