Three Comrades
1920. Erich Lohkamp, Gottfried Lenz, and Otto Koster are longtime friends who fought together as fighter pilots for the German Army in the recently concluded Great War. Each came out of the war with a different mission: Erich to enjoy all that life has to offer; Gottfried for a more peaceful, humanistic society, no matter for who i.e. what side supported in the war; and Otto to look after his two dearest friends. Using their engineering skills, they have opened a garage and operate a three driver (them) taxi service, with Otto having built his dream automobile which he has named Baby, which was also the name of his beloved fighter plane in the war. It is through Baby that the trio meets wealthy fascist Herr Breuer, who wants to buy Baby, and Breuer's platonic companion, socialite Patricia Hollmann. Erich in particular is attracted to Patricia, the two who embark on a relationship. While outsiders can see that they are in love, each resists the notion of marrying, Erich due to the differences in their social standing, and Patricia for a secret that she is keeping that Otto learns: that she is suffering from an advanced case of tuberculosis. What happens in their relationship is not only affected by these issues, but by societal events in general, where violence abounds in Germany a result of the war, that violence about which Gottfried most specifically laments.
